La Strada was an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, active from 2007 to 2011. Known for accordion, strings and multi-part vocal harmonies, the group blended chamber-pop, European folk and indie rock. They released a self-titled EP (2009), the full-length New Home (2010) and the EP In Motion (2011) on Ernest Jenning Record Co.[1][2][3]

History

Formation and early years (2007–2009)

La Strada formed in early 2007 in Brooklyn. The band developed a sound built on accordion, strings and close harmonies, and by 2008 was cited in The L Magazine annual “8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear.”[4] The self-titled debut EP followed on Ernest Jenning in January 2009.[1] The EP drew positive notices; Punknews described it as “light and airy,” highlighting the closing track “Starling.”[5]

During this period La Strada appeared on bills with several indie acts, including a Mercury Lounge date with Bowerbirds on April 27, 2009.[6] A Toronto-based music blog also reported that La Strada and Hey Rosetta! “had been touring together” around this time.[7]

New Home and touring (2010)

La Strada’s first album, New Home, was released on April 20, 2010, by Ernest Jenning.[2] Produced by Kyle “Slick” Johnson, it was recorded at Miner Street (Philadelphia) and The Buddy Project (Queens). A release-week post carried the full track list and tour dates, including a Brooklyn album show at the Knitting Factory on April 30, 2010.[8] That tour included multiple **Canadian dates** (Wakefield QC, Montreal QC, Toronto ON).[9] The band also appeared at South by Southwest and recorded a Daytrotter session published by *Paste*/Daytrotter in February 2010.[10][11]

In New York coverage that year, Time Out singled out New Home as “something a bit special,” noting the album’s mix of energetic numbers and more reflective pieces.[12] *Independent Clauses* praised the album’s “energetic, orchestral folk-pop,” calling it “a gentler Beirut with a guy who can sing.”[13]

In Motion and disbandment (2010–2011)

In October 2010 the band announced it would disband at the end of the year; the statement noted a late-November farewell. The final show was held at The Rock Shop on November 20, 2010.[14] The EP In Motion followed in 2011 on Ernest Jenning.[3]

Musical style and reception

Writers often characterized La Strada’s sound as a blend of chamber-pop, European folk and indie rock, anchored by accordion and strings. Time Out New York praised New Home for balancing propulsive tracks with more romantic material, while *Independent Clauses* emphasized its jubilant, layered arrangements.[15][16] The 2009 EP drew favorable notice from Punknews, which highlighted its airy arrangements and the climax of “Starling.”[17]
