La Toya Hankins (born September 18, 1971 in Washington, DC) is the author of LGBT themed works, including novels, poetry and prose. She also serves as the Chair of Shades of Pride, organizer of the annual Triangle Black Pride.[1]
Personal life[edit]
Born in Washington D.C, she moved to Southport, North Carolina as a young child with her mother. Much of her childhood was spent in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina and her early interests included reading, writing short stories and bike rides to the local library. Hankins is a graduate of East Carolina University obtaining a degree in journalism and a minor of political science. While pursuing her degree, she worked for the student's newspaper and literary magazine and became a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority Lambda Mu chapter.[citation needed]
Career[edit]
Openly lesbian she has been an outspoken proponent for LGBT rights. In addition to appearing in Goodreads,[2] Smashwords,[3] Joey Pinkney,[4] Manic Readers,[5] Sistahs on the Shelf,[6] and Tribes Magazine.[7] She has served as a panelist for Fire& Ink Presents!,[8] and has made speaking appearances in the Triangle area and Atlanta’s Gay Pride.[9]
