La Chilindrina is a fictional character from the mexican television sitcom El Chavo del Ocho, played by María Antonieta de las Nieves. She is a cheerful girl and good friend of Chavo and Quico. She is the only daughter of Don Ramón and great-granddaughter of Doña Nieves.
History
In El Chavo
La Chilindrina is the only daughter born to a married couple living in the neighbourhood, owned by Señor Barriga; her mother died during childbirth, so her father, Don Ramón, raised her in her early years with the help of Doña Nieves, her grandmother and great-grandmother (she would later refer to the old woman as the great-grandmother) and later on by himself.
Her name was given to her by Don Ramón because the freckles on her face reminded him of the sugar of a chilindrina; according to another version that appeared in the programme Los Supergenios de la mesa cuadrada, her real name is Espergencia[1] and she is called Chilindrina as a nickname for the same reason. She is the only daughter of Don Ramón, so she lives humbly in flat No. 72 in the neighbourhood. She would grow up there as one of the only two children in the place along with Quico. At the age of four he would meet Chavo, when he arrived in the neighbourhood; from that moment on, the boy would become his closest friend, his playmate, his companion in games, his mischief and sometimes his unrequited love.
Spin-off film
La Chilindrina travels with her "bizcabuela" Doña Nieves to visit her aunt Andolza (in 1994 they made "La Chilindrina en apuros"), and has new adventures in Mexico City like getting to take an apple with a pearl inside, being chased by Don Cogliane and his accomplices, going to Father Casimiro's church and to the convent where she befriends Sister Momicia (character played by Lili Inclán, and in the series as well).
Spin-off series
Following the events of the film La Chilindrina en Apuros, the series Aquí está la Chilindrina, a sitcom made by Televisa between 1994 and 1995, was made to replace the show Papá Soltero. In the first episode, Doña Nieves is heard saying that the Chilindrina went to the convent to be reformed, being expected by Father Filemón Luna, the Mother Superior and several nuns. The problem is that the pranks continued instead of stopping. The production was directed by Rubén Aguirre, known as "El Profesor Jirafales" within Chavo and the series Aquí está la Chilindrina (although well received, especially for the mention of Chespirito in the introduction) had only 16 episodes.
Personality
La Chilindrina is a very naughty, mischievous and playful 8 year old girl. She is somewhat bossy, manipulative and conniving with her friends (especially with Popis) and is arguably the most cunning of the group. She is deeply in love with Chavo, which is why she is jealous of Patty, a neighbour who appears in some episodes (she was once played by the actress's own daughter), that Chavo is in love with her, although she is sometimes shown as if she is his friend. Despite being in love with Chavo, she sometimes plays practical jokes on him, as in one episode when they play animal riddles and she hits Chavo every time he fails, for which she ends up punished by Don Ramón. She is very attached to her father. She does not get along well with Doña Florinda, because of the slaps she gives her father, which she usually calls her "Vieja pegona", "Vieja pegostiosa" or "Vieja chancluda". She has an unbiased relationship with Professor Jirafales, Señor Barriga and Jaimito the postman. Like all the children in the neighbourhood, they used to call Doña Clotilde "Bruja" (witch). However, when her father left the neighbourhood in 1979, she was taken care of by her "great-grandmother", Doña Nieves, who promised her grandson Don Ramón that she would look after Chilindrina and who is also identical to her, and when he returned to the neighbourhood in 1981, it was a very emotional reunion, perhaps the most emotional in the whole history of the neighbourhood where the Chilindrina cried with joy, and in this same year he retires again and goes on a trip abroad to get a huge fortune, according to what the Chilindrina says in the Christmas episode.
Appearance
Chilindrina's most significant feature is her extremely short stature, the image given by the programme being a way of highlighting this characteristic. She wears patent leather shoes and white socks with lace, a short dress that leaves the bottom edge of her underwear exposed, which consists of a long white underwear with lace, over her dress an ill-fitting jumper (twisted in the back), her black hair in two (uneven) pigtails and a pair of thick black tortoiseshell glasses.
At first his pigtails were long, they became shorter after the episode "Don Ramón peluquero" (in 1973 and 1976), in which El Chavo cuts them while playing "la peluquería". His hairstyle changes during the Chespirito series.
Costumes
Throughout El Chavo del Ocho series, this character has had multiple costumes:
- 1972: Tight-fitting white dress, white trainers and white socks.
- 1973/1975: Beige dress with pink stripes and sometimes white trainers or black shoes.
- Late 1975-1977: Green dress, with a pocket on the left with black dots.
- 1976-1977: Added green woollen jumper, crossed at the back and sometimes white trainers or black shoes.
- Mid 1977: Change the green jumper for a red one and white trainers.
- Late 1977-1980: The green dress is modified to darker, a collar is added to match his pocket.
- Mid 1979: White trainers changed to black shoes.
- Late 1980-1992: The collar and pocket are changed to yellow. It is the definitive dress used until the end of the sketches, but in the series "Aquí esta la Chilindrina" of 1994 and the film "La Chilindrina en apuros" of 1994, it remains until today when María Antonieta de las Nieves reincarnates the character.
- For important events (e.g. the "La fiesta de la buena vecindad") she wore a red dress with long sleeves.
- In the episode "La Casita de Quico" (1977), when she goes to see her grandmother, she wears a pink dress with short sleeves.
- In Vacaciones en Acapulco she wore a red swimming costume.
- In the comics he wore an orange dress with short sleeves.
However, the one thing she always kept constant was:
- The white school shoes, although she sometimes wore black school shoes with white socks uneven one from the other leg in some cases.
- The two uneven ponytails, one on the side of the head and large black glasses, and later with lenses.
Absence in the animated series
The constant fights between Roberto Gómez Bolaños (El Chavo) and María Antonieta de las Nieves (La Chilindrina) are due to the fact that the latter registered the copyright over the character of La Chilindrina and the former claims that the character was created by him.[2] These fights resulted in the absence of La Chilindrina in El Chavo animated series broadcast since 2006. After the death of Roberto Gómez Bolaños on 28 November 2014, it was believed that Chilindrina would make it to the animated series. However, the animated series was cancelled on 6 June of the same year, so La Chilindrina's arrival on the animated series was no longer possible. It is worth noting that the pilot episode of Chavo Animado (made in 2001) does feature La Chilindrina, and her voice was performed in the hidden episode by Liliana Barba.
