Lady Ballers is a 2023 comedy film starring, directed and co-written by Jeremy Boreing, co-CEO of conservative media company The Daily Wire.[2] It also stars Daniel Considine, Jake Crain, David Cone, Blain Crain, and Tyler Fischer. Boreing plays a down-on-his-luck-coach who will do anything to win, even bring his old male basketball team together to compete in women's sports.[3]

The movie has cameos from Daily Wire contributors and other prominent right-wing figures. Senator Ted Cruz and former competitive swimmer Riley Gaines both made cameo appearances as themselves.[4][5] Daily Wire's Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, Candace Owens, Michael Knowles, Andrew Klavan, Brett Cooper, and Jordan Peterson all make appearances.[6]

Plot

Coach Rob was once a successful high school basketball coach, but years after he led his team to win three back-to-back state championships, he finds himself in the shadow of his former glory. Along with the fact that his wife left him for her new boyfriend, Rob is fired from his coaching position for coaching too agressively. In his desperation, Rob applies for a job at a drag bar, where he meets his former star point guard, Alex, who is also working there. This gives Rob an idea: he convinces Alex to compete in a women's track and field competition by claiming to be transgender, and he wins every event. The antagonist, reporter Gwen, meets with Rob and Alex afterwards to get them to work for her, and they accept her offer.[7]

Rob and Alex then reassemble the old team from the state championships, and after Rob's daughter helpes convince the team that it's a good idea, they form the team called the Lady Ballers and join a women's basketball league, all of them claiming to be transgender. The Lady Ballers easily win their first and second basketball games in the league, and between the games the members participate in other womens sports, such as swimming, weightlifting, and little-league baseball.

However, as this goes on, Rob begins feeling increasingly guilty, as his actions strain his already fragile relationship with his wife, who does not approve of what he is doing. Also, Felix and Alex express to Rob that they are begining to believe they're truly transgender, which troubles him. When Rob brings these worries to Gwen, however, she becomes angry with him. So, in the final championship basketball game, the Lady Ballers are surprised to find that the opposing team is comprised of black men who claim to be transgender, which was orchestrated by Gwen.

The Lady Ballers find themselves badly losing at halftime, and so despite Gwen's threats and her attempt to kill him with a sniper rifle, Rob decides to finally do the right thing. He arranges for his daughter to come along with a team of little girls, who replace the Lady Ballers on the court. Not sure what to do, the opposing team plays against these girls lightheartedly, letting them pass to each other, and lifting them up to the basket to dunk the ball. With this heartwarming ending, Rob's wife gives him a look of approval, and the Lady Ballers disband, putting an end to their participation in women's sports.

Reception

John Serba of Decider.com (a New York Post affiliated website) was reminded of the film Juwanna Mann and says, "Lady Baller's is funny on occasion, but only unintentionally". He concludes it "isn't offensive as much as it's just depressing."[9] Film critic Christian Toto praises it for "smart gags, impeccable timing and an 'amateur' cast that gets the job done" commending Boreing for "maintaining a consistent tone and quality" but acknowledges that the film is not for progressives, who would not appreciate it or find the satirical targets appropriate.[10] Andrew Stiles of the Washington Free Beacon gave it a mostly positive review, declaring that "Hilarity ensues, for the most part. Though probably not destined to become a comedy classic, Lady Ballers is a welcome alternative to any of the Hollywood-approved 'comedy' offerings of late."[11]

The Washington Times reported that "pundits at the Daily Wire predicted that their first feature-length comedy, 'Lady Ballers,' would trigger the left, and they weren't wrong."[12]
