Laga skiftet
Laga skiftet was an agricultural land reform in Sweden that was introduced in 1827.[1][2]
Background
Until the 18th century, Swedish farmland was distributed in an open-field system (tegskifte), where farmers lived in a village and were given narrow strips of land distributed over the entire village farmland.[3][4] This system guaranteed each farmer access to different types of soil, providing them with protection against poor harvests.[5]
The reform
The reform of laga skifte meant that land owners would no longer own individual stripes of land, but rather specific, concentrated areas of the village land.
Effects
In order to enable a situation where each landowner owned a fully connected area whilst at the same time not making the distance between the landowner's home and the landowner's crop field too long, some homes had to be moved out of the village.[6] The implementation of the reform also meant that parts of the village land that was previously common land became private land; it was legally divided among the land owning villagers.[7] The villagers who did not own land would often have to leave the area they lived in as old contracts they had had with landowners were not renewed, and as they could no longer make use of previously common land.[8]
