Lake Geneva Depot

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Lake Geneva Depot is a demolished railway station in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

History[edit]

The station opened when the line was extended from Richmond, Illinois. When service began in 1871 trains began to run between Chicago and Lake Geneva via the West Line. This circuitous route made stops on the main line between Wells Street Station and West Chicago, then turning northwest on the line to Freeport as far as Elgin then heading straight north, making stops at East Dundee, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Ringwood, Richmond, and Genoa City. The line was later extended to Williams Bay. In the early 20th century stations were added in Carpentersville, Pell Lake, and Lake Como. Later on, service was discontinued between Elgin and Crystal Lake leaving Chicago-Williams Bay trains to run via the more direct Northwest Line. The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company came close to extending their Milwaukee to Burlington line to Lake Geneva and give a direct rail connection to Milwaukee. But this never happened for socioeconomic reasons. Service was in decline in the post World War 2 years. The line was abandoned to Williams Bay in 1966, making Lake Geneva again the northern terminus of the line. The end came for service to Lake Geneva when the operation was cut back to Richmond, the northernmost stop in Illinois. The tracks were removed between here and Ringwood in 1982 as redundant to the Milwaukee Road's line between Fox Lake and Walworth. Finally the station was demolished in 1986.
