The Lago di Lova is a small artificial lake located in the municipal territory of Borno, in Val Camonica.

Description

It occupies the bottom of a basin of glacial origin, at just under 1300 meters above sea level, between the mountain group of Pizzo Camino (2491 m) and Monte Mignone (1742 m).

The reservoir was built in 1935 as a hydroelectric basin, a function it still serves today. The dam containing it (80,000 cubic meters of volume) is made of loose materials with an earth core and is partially lined on both sides. The crest is 340 meters long, and the maximum height reaches 18 meters.

At full capacity, the basin covers an area of 13.3 hectares and a maximum volume of 455,000 cubic meters. However, the amount of stored water strongly depends on the season, with a maximum during the peak of spring snowmelt (April, May) and during periods of heavy autumn rainfall. Additionally, for several months of the year, it may be partially frozen. The lake is fed by two modest mountain streams descending from the surrounding slopes, and any excess water is discharged downstream, forming the San Fiorino stream, the natural outflow of the lake, a left tributary of the Trobiolo [it].

Lago di Lova is situated in a natural environment typical of the Lombard Prealps [it], with forests of Norway spruce framing the basin on the southern shore.

Access

Lago di Lova can be reached in several ways. From Borno, a very steep paved road (marked, among others, as trail number 82 by the CAI) climbs to the lake in about 3 kilometers. The very steep gradient (with peaks well above 20%) and the partially rough surface make it an itinerary suitable only for sturdy off-road vehicles. There is a parking area near the lake.

From the paved road, at the Navertino locality, a natural-surface road branches off to the right, crossing the San Fiorino stream and climbing the opposite side of the small valley, where it forks. To the left, an unmarked trail (sentér de Còler) climbs steeply through a dense forest to reach the southern end of the lake, where the water intake and control structures are located. To the right, the forest road ascends the southern slopes of Dos d'Averta (1501 m), eventually joining the trail near the lake.

The lake can also be reached from Ossimo Superiore, via a steep mule track that climbs from the upper part of the village to the Baleggie locality (about 1300 m above sea level), from where it continues flat to the lake. Finally, it is possible to reach Lago di Lova from Villa, a hamlet of Lozio, by crossing the Colle del Mignone (1526 m). All these routes are accessible only on foot or by mountain bike, as motorized vehicles are prohibited.
