Lake Metroparks is a park district in Lake County, Ohio.[4] The park district manages over 8100 acres of land spread over 36 parks and nature preserves. The park district properties include, 60 miles of trail, 6 parks on the Lake Erie coast, 2 golf courses, a wildlife rehabilitation center[5], and the Lake Metroparks Farmpark. Lake Metroparks properties offer hiking, fishing, biking, birding, boating, camping[6], golfing, archery, horseback riding, swimming, and cross-country skiing.[7][8][9]
Six of Lake Metroparks properties are located along the Grand River.[10] Some of these parks allow guests to kayak/canoe into a campsite, such as Indian Point Park. [11][12] Steelhead trout are fished for in the Grand River, drawing people to the parks.[13] 2 parks along the Grand River are home to cabins that the park district rents out by the night. These parks being Hogback Ridge Park and Hidden Valley Park.[14][15]
A further six Lake Metroparks properties lay along the coast of Lake Erie.[10] These parks contain numerous beaches, rare species of plants and animals[16], hiking and biking trails, campsites and a lookout tower.[17][8]
History
Lake Metroparks was founded in 1958 under Chapter 1545 of the Ohio Revised Code. The lake county Probate Court Judge appoints a 3 citizen board to govern the park district.[4] The first property of the park district was a 30 acre plot of land donated by William Wyman. The property donated is now a park called Helen Hazen Wyman Park, named after William's mother. The main natural feature of the park is Big Creek emptying into the Grand River.[18]
