Lake Nigat
Nigat Lake (Amharic: ንጋት ሐይቅ, Nigat Hayk; lit. "Lake of Dawn") is the reservoir formed by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. The name was announced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in September 2025, symbolizing enlightenment and prosperity for present and future generations of Ethiopians.[1]
Etymology
The Amharic word Nigat (ንጋት) translates to "dawn" in English. The name was chosen to symbolize Ethiopia's vision of national awakening, enlightenment, and long-term prosperity.[2]
Overview
Nigat Lake is the artificial reservoir created by the GERD, a large roller-compacted concrete gravity dam in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region of Ethiopia.[3][circular reference]

History
Construction of the GERD began in 2011. The first filling of the reservoir was achieved in July 2020, followed by successive phases until the final filling in October 2024.[4]
On 1 September 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed formally announced that the reservoir would be named Nigat Lake.[5]
Significance
Nigat Lake plays a central role in Ethiopia's ambitions to achieve energy self-sufficiency, expand hydroelectric power generation, and support fisheries and irrigation. The GERD project, together with the reservoir, is expected to produce over 5,000 MW of electricity, making it the largest hydropower facility in Africa.[6]
