The Lakewood Memorial Library is an association library[4] located in Lakewood, New York. When the current location was opened to the public, it was called, "A modern and spacious home for literature, art, and information."[5]
The mission of the Lakewood Memorial Library is to help community members of all ages improve their quality of life by providing access to materials and services that meet their personal, educational, and professional needs.[6] The current Director is Shannon Taylor, who was appointed by the Board of Trustees in July 2019.[7]
History[edit]
On February 24, 1959, the Lakewood Women’s Club raised the idea of establishing a library in the Village of Lakewood. [8] While the Town of Busti had already established the Hazeltine Public Library in 1924[9], more than half of the population of the Town was consolidated in the Village. [10] An official request was first made on July 20, 1959 by Women’s Club President Mrs. Nancy Swanson (J. Parker) that the Lakewood Village Board allow space in the Village Hall Basement to begin the library project. [11] It was suggested that the library could be a project for the Town and that a presentation should be made at the next Town Board Meeting. Mrs. Swanson presented the project to the Town Board on September 2, 1959. Town Supervisor Joseph Gerace appointed a committee to explore the idea.[12] A request for $2,000 in support from the Town was made on October 7, 1959[13] and was included in the Town’s 1960 budget. The Women’s Club pledged $850 to the library budget as well as two volunteer hours per month given by each of the clubs 150 members. [14] The Village Board was unable to provide space within the Village Hall, so they formed a committee to help find a location within the community. [15] On April 12, 1960, the Women’s Club announced that they had secured a space on Chautauqua Ave in Lakewood. [16]
On the advice of the New York State Library Extension Service, between May 19 and May 23 the individuals most closely involved with the project met independently of their other affiliations to form the Lakewood-Busti Library Association and the Lakewood Memorial Library. The charter paperwork was filed and sent to the Board of Regents for approval, [17][18]with the Charter being granted the following month. [19] The next several months saw the fledgling board undertake the task of preparing the new library to open to the public.[20][21][22]
Early Years[edit]
The Lakewood Memorial Library officially opened its doors on December 4, 1960, with the first library card being presented to Mrs. Lucy Peak, Lakewood Village Historian, retired librarian of the Lakewood High school, and General Advisor to the Board of Trustees.[23][24] The library was admitted into the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System on March 7, 1961.[25][26] By the end of the first full year, the Library had doubled its collection size, issued 961 library cards, and circulated 6,675 works.[27][28]
