Laleh Molaei (Persian: لاله مولائی; born 12 November 1979) is an Iranian researcher and author whose work spans linguistics, semiotics, coaching and leadership.[2][3] She has developed a coaching approach she terms "Semiotic Coaching", which draws on semiotics and linguistics to examine meaning-making processes in personal, professional and organisational contexts.[4][5] Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Language Related Research and the International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring, and has been presented at international academic events and professional forums.[6][7] Her work is recognized as a seminal work in the field of semiotic coaching.[8][9]
Biography
Molaei studied linguistics at Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran, where she obtained both her master's degree and PhD.[2] She ranked first in the national entrance examination for the master's programme in linguistics in 2014 (1393 in the Iranian calendar).[2] She has received research grants from the National Elite Foundation of Iran and from university institutions.[2][10]
Alongside her linguistic training, Molaei completed an ontological coaching programme in Australia.[11] She has worked as a researcher, instructor and coach in academic, organisational and professional settings.[2][11] Her research applies transdisciplinary perspectives linking linguistics, semiotics, coaching, leadership and related fields.[4]
Semiotic Coaching
Molaei has developed Semiotic Coaching, which she describes as a variant of coaching grounded in semiotics, with particular reference to the Paris School of semiotics and the work of Jacques Fontanille.[4] In her article "Toward Semiotic Coaching (Paris School): Change and Transformation", she proposes a Semiotic Coaching model based on modal verbs and the concept of Khodnavardi (self-journeying), describing reflexive interaction between the self, others and the world in processes of change and transformation.[4]
In her publications, Molaei describes Semiotic Coaching as examining underlying layers of meaning in clients' discourse and situating coaching as a recursive process of becoming, self-transformation and empowerment.[4][5] Her 2024 article in the International Journal of Evidence Based Coaching and Mentoring examines roles and attitudes as transitory identities within semiotic processes of change.[5]
Molaei presented aspects of her Semiotic Coaching framework at the 20th Coaching and Mentoring Research Conference at Oxford Brookes University in January 2024, where she discussed modal verbs, educational semiotics/edusemiotics,educational linguistics and ontological coaching/linguistic coaching .[6] In February 2025, an EMCC Global research webinar featured her Semiotic Coaching research under the title "A seminal work derived from longitudinal, evidence-based research".[7] An international seminar introducing Semiotic Coaching was also reported by the Allameh Tabataba'i University News Agency (ATNA) in January 2025.[12]
Research and publications
Molaei's research interests include semiotics of discourse, applied linguistics, meaning, educational leadership, educational semiotics/edusemiotics, educational linguistics, organisational semiotics, coaching and leadership studies.[4][13] She has published articles in Iranian and international journals on the interface between semiotics and coaching, educational semiotics and modality in language and coaching contexts.[4][14][5]
Her books in Persian include Coaching: Philosophical, Linguistic, Social, and Cognitive Approaches (with Reference to Linguistics and Semiotics) (first edition 2021; second edition 2022) and Coaching: Counseling/Consulting, Mentoring, and Supervision (2023), published by Logos in Tehran.[15] These books discuss coaching from philosophical, linguistic, social and cognitive perspectives.[15][16]
She has also written articles and reports on educational linguistics, organisational semiotics and the application of coaching in areas such as entrepreneurship and student self-employment.[17][18][19]
