The Lancaster Sound Breakers are a baseball team located in Lancaster, California that was founded in 2023. They were named for the city's association with the aerospace industry and play their home games at The Hangar.
History[edit]
On November 8, 2022, the Independent Pecos League announced the Lancaster Sound Breakers as an expansion team and will join the California-based Pacific Division. The Pecos League first proposed the Lancaster Sound Breakers in 2021 when the Lancaster JetHawks of the Advanced Class-A California League lost its Major League Baseball affiliation during the restructuring of Minor League Baseball prior to the 2021 season. The team began play in May 2023. [1] In December 2022, the former mascot of the Lancaster JetHawks, KaBoom, was named as the new mascot of the Lancaster Sound Breakers. He made his debut wearing a Lancaster Sound Breakers' jersey (#13) during the Palmdale Christmas Parade on December 10, 2022.
2023 Inaugural Season[edit]
In a one-game spring training, the Lancaster Sound Breakers started their inaugural season at Sam Lynn Ballpark on the road against the Bakersfield Train Robbers on May 22nd, winning 17-7. The Sound Breakers played their first game on the road on May 25th at Sam Lynn Ballpark against the Bakersfield Train Robbers, losing 9-4. On May 26th, the Sound Breakers played their first home game at The Hangar against the Train Robbers, losing 18-15. Lancaster got their first win of the season at home on May 27th against the Train Robbers, 8-7. The Sound Breakers played 18 home games on Friday and Saturday nights with 6:35 PM start times during their 50-game season. They ended their inaugural season with a record of 28-22 in 4th place in the Pacific Division, earning them a playoff berth with three other Pacific Division teams: the San Rafael Pacifics (1st place, 41-8), the Monterey Amberjacks (2nd place, 32-19), and the Bakersfield Train Robbers (3rd place, 30-19). During the three-game Semi Finals, the Sound Breakers played two games on the road at Albert Park against the San Rafael Pacifics on July 31st and August 1st. Unfortunately, they lost both games, 12-3 and 4-0, respectively. The Sound Breakers were 13-4 at The Hangar. On August 16, 2023, Evan Antonellis was announced as Pecos League Pacific Division Most Valuable Player in the Antelope Valley Press.[2]

KaBoom[edit]
Since the 1996 inaugural season of the Lancaster JetHawks to 2020, KaBoom (KB for short) has been the JetHawks' mascot. In the 2008 season, he introduced an all-new look as part of his team's complete image makeover. KB entertains fans at games and participates in contests between innings like the Fun Run from right to left field and racing children around the bases from first base to home plate. He can often be seen walking around the stadium planning his next stunt. KaBoom also encourages children in Antelope Valley schools to read with his own KaBoom's Reading Challenge. In December 2022, he donned a New Jersey and became the new mascot of the Lancaster Sound Breakers for the 2023 inaugural season. During the inaugural 2023 season, he wore a baby blue Lancaster Sound Breakers' jersey (#4) with white baseball pants with black gloves.
The Hangar[edit]
The Lancaster Sound Breakers play home games at The Hangar which opened in 1996 as Lancaster Municipal Stadium. The Hangar served as the home stadium of the Lancaster JetHawks, a minor league baseball team in the Advanced A California League, from 1996 to 2020. The Hangar has just over 4,500 permanent seats, but can accommodate over 7,000 fans with grass seating along each foul line. The stadium has deep fences (350 feet (110 m) down the right and left field lines and 410 feet (120 m) to deep center field) to combat the prevailing winds of the Antelope Valley. Known now by its nickname "The Hangar" after the signage of Clear Channel Stadium (2005–2012) was removed during the 2012 season for the Lancaster JetHawks, the stadium has a NASA F/A-18 Hornet mounted on display at the front entrance.
