Landfall is a 2015 work of hard science fiction by English author, Stephen Baxter. It is the third and final installment in the Ark/Flood series. Following the events of Flood and Ark, which saw a group of survivors flee a drowning Earth, Landfall tells three stories, one set on each of the planets now containing human life.

Plot Summary[edit]

Taking place approximately 400 years after the events of Ark, the first of the stories, Earth II follows Xaia, a leader and warrior from a nation island known as Zeeland. In the midst of expansion, Xaia sets out to secure her legacy by conquering the Belt, a slim continent that stretches around the planet and also contains the original landing site of the Founders. The inhabitants of Earth II learn that their planet is undergoing significant changes due to the gravitational properties of its solar system, and must ultimately decide between clinging to tradition or creating a new world order to survive.

1,000 years after the events of Ark, Earth III shows a population of humans for whom the idea that their universe is a simulation is a core belief. Tripp, a woman from the north polar region of the planet, which is tidally locked with its parent star, refuses to believe that they are living in a simulation and sets out to the antistellar point (the point of the planet directly opposite the star) in an effort to prove it. Tripp is accompanied by Vala and Brod, two lovers who are trying to outrun an army.

10,000 years after the events of Ark, Earth I sees a return to Earth. Humanity has become an interplanetary species which emerged from the civilizations of Earth II and Earth III. A group of humans set out on a mission to find Urthen (Earth n), with various agendas of proving or disproving their people's core beliefs at play. They find Earth, a world buried under a global ocean, and learn that the descendants of humanity that never left the planet have evolved into ocean mammals with stubby limbs, webbed appendages, and no signs of human intelligence.

Reasons for Writing[edit]

Landfall was written in response to fans and book reviewers[1] wanting to know more about what happened after the end of the Flood and Ark novels. In the introduction to Landfall, Baxter says of the Flood and Ark novels that "possibly my most frequently asked question since then has been 'What happened next?' The three novellas included here are intended to answer that question.".
