Lane, Texas
Lane is an unincorporated area located in Hunt County in the State of Texas, located between Merit, Dulaney, Blue Ridge, and Celeste, Texas. It has historic significance in several aspects, having had at its heyday prior to World War II five concurrently operating cotton gins (compresses), its own school district, medical facilities and more in years past.
Urban progress and ETJ[definition needed] are pressures that tend to make small non-incorporated areas such as Lane "disappear" from more common maps, while many of the elderly living in the area with a cognizance of its history feel powerless to maintain their rural lifestyle or history.
At one point in the last decade,[when?] the State of Texas replaced all the roadside "LANE" signage in the area with new signs, only to find them removed by someone within the area within days. Only the posts remained, along with a sign for the LANE CEMETARY, which has an official historic preservation page. The residents in the area still resist being considered a subportion of any of the neighboring areas, and can still point out landmarks where only straight tree lines and fences highlight what used to be travelled dirt roads to other communities.
