From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Langbasa[1] is in Eti-osa local government of Lagos State, Nigeria. A vast area of the town is bordered by the lagoon. It is a stone's throw from Ajah and a 15 minute boat ride to Ikorodu on the other side.

Economy

Langbasa was a fishing community but has developed into a multi-economic town in recent years.

Religion

Like most Yoruba communities, Langbasa's major religion is Traditional, while there are also Christians and Muslims present.

History of Langbasa

Prince Elejigbo,[2] a crown prince of Ile-Ife left the ancient town with four of his brothers, namely: Iwopin, Ajalorun, Awujale and Ode (not in any particular order), in a bid to establish an empire of their own.

They left with all their households and all the paraphernalia of an Oba, which included beaded crowns, beaded staff, beaded necklaces, and their numerous deities, including the Ifa Oracle and others.

They traveled several kilometres and arrived at a place in Ijebu land.

Here they beheld a stream which impeded their march.

Faced with this problem, they were compelled to consult the Ifa Oracle, which advised that the eldest of the brothers, Iwopin, should pitch his tent at the spot because he had reached his ordained settlement.

Consequently, Iwopin and his followers settled at Ajidangan, and the other brothers and their numerous followers continued on their onward journey and search for their dream domains.

The remaining brothers continued on the journey and settled in different locations as divined by Ifa. Elejigbo went ahead to settle in a land so vast and came up with the name Langbasa. The meaning of the word "Langbasa" is "Ola mi gba Osa," which means "My honour extends over a large area".

Tourist attractions and festivals

Langbasa, like any other Yoruba ancient town, has traditional rites and festivals which it has performed from time immemorial.

The people of Langbasa still worship deities to this day, which include Ifa Oracle, Ogun, Sango, Obatala, Imale, Oluweri, and Jigbo (Remireke).

As a matter of fact, special periods are set aside for annual worship of these gods, especially the Jigbo Agbo Remireke which is attended by a very large crowd.

The community also has its own Iledi (Osugbo fraternity) and Irele (Awo-opa), which are all symbols of royalty.
