Lani Sarem (date of birth unknown) is an American band manager and author who became infamous in 2017 for using a book ratings scam to get her small-press fantasy novel Handbook for Mortals to the #1 rank on The New York Times Bestseller List.[1] Handbook for Mortals is Sarem's debut (and only published) book, which she had originally intended to be adapted into a full-length feature film. The book has since become symbolic of the more problematic aspects of the modern book publishing industry and the validity, or lack thereof, of book ratings and reviews as a true indicator of popularity.[2][3]
