Lanny Lahr
Lanny Lahr (born December 9, 1943) is an American Pharmacist, Businessperson, and Philanthropist. He was the owner of Lahr Pharmacies and was twice President of the Jewish Federation of Great Phoenix, as well as a Phoenix, Arizona based philanthropist. He has won numerous awards in the Jewish community.[1][2]
Early Life
Lahr was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on December 9, 1943, as the youngest of three siblings. He was born into a German-Jewish family. Shortly after birth, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he spent most of his youth. When he was 13, his father Harry died of appendicitis. He attended Henry Ford High School, and then attended Ferris State University after a short hiatus[3]. During this time he met his wife, Marlene, and they were married during his time at Ferris State[3]. After four years at Ferris State, he graduated with a degree in Pharmacy.
Career
Pharmaceutical Career
In 1971, shortly after graduating from Ferris State, Lahr moved to Phoenix, Arizona with Marlene. Originally planning to operate inside of Fry's Food Stores, Lahr pulled out and instead opened Lahr Pharmacies. Lahr Pharmacies quickly spread throughout most of the Moon Valley neighborhood in Phoenix. They specialized in selling prescription drugs, mostly to Nursing Homes, but also in their corner stores [4] Lahr was bought out in 1996 by United Drug Corp., and the Lahr Pharmacy name was dropped. However, he served as President of United Drug Corp after being bought out[5].
Business
Lahr is an angel investor and close friend of Howard Lindzon, and is an active investor in his holding company, Social Leverage, as well as an early user of his site, StockTwits.[6][7].
Philanthropy
Lahr is a well-known Jewish philanthropist. He was first elected President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix in 1985, and served in the role until 1987[8]. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was instrumental in bringing the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center to Scottsdale[5][9]. Upon completion in 2001, Lahr was re-elected President[8]. He served in this role until 2006[10] There is a field on the campus named after him and Marlene. He has won many awards, including the Irv Schulman Award, the Am Echad Award, and the Tree of Life Award [11] [2][12]. Most importantly, he won the Jewish Community Federation Medal of Honor, its most prestigious award [13]
Personal Life
Lanny has been married to his wife Marlene for over 50 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.
