Lara Korte is an American journalist who served as Middle East correspondent for military newspaper Stars and Stripes until 2026.[1][2]

Early life and education

Korte was born in Kansas[3] and raised in Wichita.[4] She attended Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, graduating in 2015.[5]

Korte attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 2019 with a degree in journalism and political science.[3][6] While at the University of Kansas, she wrote for the university's newspaper,[5] worked as a political reporter at the Kansas City Star,[7] and had internships at The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Wall Street Journal and The Wichita Eagle.[3][5] In 2017, while studying abroad, she wrote on press freedom in Morocco for Middle East Eye.[3] She was a 2019 Reporting Fellow at The Texas Tribune.[6]

Career

In August 2020, Korte joined The Sacramento Bee as a politics reporter.[3] She had previously worked at the Austin American-Statesman, where she covered higher education.[3]

Korte previously worked at Politico, covering state politics and as co-author of Politico California Playbook.[8]

Stars and Stripes

Throughout the 2026 Iran war, Korte, who was based in Germany, had covered the U.S. military's engagements in the region, including reporting on uncertainties facing military families in the Middle East following the evacuations of US bases in the region following Iranian attacks.[9][10]

In July 2026, Korte and Stars and Stripes editor in chief Erik Slavin were interviewed for a CBS Sunday Morning piece.[11][10] In the segment, Korte defended her piece on upcoming US concerts by American rapper Bad Bunny, saying, "We have a lot of people who are newly stationed here overseas. They want to find interesting trips to take. They want to have fun."[11]

Firing

On August 21, 2026, Korte, along with Slavin and Stars and Stripes publisher Max Lederer, were fired.[12][13]

In a social media statement following her dismissal, Korte said the firings were "a shame for the institution and service members, who swore to defend the Constitution and deserve the right to a free and independent press."[14] She added that the firing was for “insubordination after I told a CBS reporter that I work for Stars and Stripes – not the Pentagon, not any administration, and not any policy maker".[15]
