Career

Larry Baer is nationally recognized as one of professional sports’ most visionary figures. A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Baer is a graduate of UC Berkeley and the Harvard Business School. He began his career in the media industry, working at Westinghouse Broadcasting and CBS Inc. While at CBS, he served as special assistant to Chairman Laurence Tisch.

Baer was vital in keeping the Giants in San Francisco. Along with Peter Magowan, Baer helped assemble a new ownership group. He served as a limited partner and board member and became executive vice president of the Giants in 1992. He has been an integral part of the organization for the nearly 30 years since and was named CEO on January 1, 2012.

As a key strategist and negotiator, Baer has had a guiding hand in many of the club’s significant transactions, strategic partnerships, and major projects. He helped sign Barry Bonds in November 1992 and secured a naming rights agreement with Pacific Bell (now AT&T) in 1996.

Baer’s leadership and direction were instrumental in the development and construction of Pacific Bell Park. Pacific Bell Park opened in 2000 and was the first privately financed Major League ballpark and has received praise and accolades as one of the nation’s best ballparks. In 2008, the park was named Sports Business Journal’s “Sports Facility of the Year”. Baer secured the naming rights agreement with Oracle in 2019, with the park now dubbed Oracle Park, and was the prime mover behind the partnership between the Giants and Comcast, which created the NBC Sports Bay Area regional sports network.

Baer has also been vital to the growth and overall success of the Giants organization. In 2011, the Giants were named Sports Business Journal’s Professional Sports Organization of the Year. In 2012, Baer’s first year as CEO, the Giants won their second World Series in three years. They won their third title in five years in 2014 and have held a National League home record sellout streak: 530 games over six seasons (2011–2016).

Baer has served on numerous Major League Baseball boards and committees, including the MLB’s Business and Media Board and International Committee. He also chaired the Strategic Planning Committee. He currently serves as chairman and CEO of Giants Development Services, which is constructing Mission Rock.

Mission Rock is a mixed-use, urban neighborhood. This 28-acre site (located across McCovey from Oracle Park) will include 1,500 residential units, 1.3 million square feet of office space, and more than 8 acres of green and open spaces. The neighborhood will also house the world headquarters of Visa Inc.; a parking structure for ballpark and Mission Rock patrons; and 250,000 square feet of public amenities, restaurants, and retail shops.

Awards and Accolades

Baer is a Board of Directors member of NBC Sports (Bay Area), the Bay Area Council, and the San Francisco Committee on Jobs. He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Pacific Regions.

Throughout his almost 30-year career with the Giants, Larry Baer has received many awards and accolades for his professional and philanthropic efforts. He was the San Francisco Boys and Girls Clubs’ 2010 Person of the Year and the 2012 Harvard Business School Alumnus of the Year.
