Larry Vance is a Canadian national, presently living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He has spent his entire working career in aviation, first as a flying instructor, then as a Civil Aviation Inspector for Transport Canada, then as an accident investigator for the Canadian Aviation Safety Board (CASB) and its successor the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), and finally as a consultant providing investigation expertise in cases where there could be litigation. He retired in 2021.

With CASB/TSB, Vance was assigned as Investigator-In-Charge to more than 200 field investigations. He also participated in hundreds of additional investigations in various roles, both domestically and internationally. One prominent role was that of Deputy Investigator-In-Charge of the Swissair 111 crash investigation, for which he and his team received a Government of Canada Certification of Recognition. He also received the prestigious Government of Canada Merit Award for authoring the first version of the CASB/TSB Manual of Investigation Operations.

As a consultant, Vance worked on numerous high-profile investigations worldwide, providing expert reports and testimony at hearings and court proceedings. Also as a consultant, he provided accident investigation training to numerous international clients, including aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and government investigative agencies.

Vance is the author of two books. The first, MH370 Mystery Solved, is about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. It outlines the evidence that is available to explain what happened to the aircraft. The second, Picking Through the Pieces, is an autobiographical account of his career. It contains personal reflections on many of his field investigation experiences, and also provides behind-the-scenes insight into how investigations are conducted.

Larry Vance was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Wilbert Carter Vance and Mary Eileen Rebecca Long. He was raised in Sackville, New Brunswick. He and his wife. Charlotte. have three children: Tanya, Laraine, and Andrew.
