Lars Eggert is a computer scientist and internet standards engineer who served as chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) from 2021 to 2024.[1] He is a Senior Principal Software Engineer for networking, security and privacy at Mozilla.[2]

Education

Eggert received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2003.[2]

Career

From 2003 to 2006, Eggert was a senior researcher at NEC Labs. He subsequently held a position as Principal Scientist at Nokia, where he served on Nokia's CTO and CEO Technology Councils. From 2009 to 2014, he was concurrently an Adjunct Professor at Aalto University. Before joining Mozilla in 2023, he was a Distinguished Engineer at NetApp.[2]

Within the IETF, Eggert served as Transport Area Director from 2006 to 2011,[3] and later as General Area Director (2021–2024) in his capacity as IETF Chair. He also chaired the IETF's QUIC working group and served as chair of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), the IETF's research arm. He is a member of the IETF's steering group and architecture board, and a director on the board of the IETF Administration LLC.[4]

Technical work

Eggert has authored or co-authored 23 RFCs, including contributions to UDP usage guidelines (RFC 8085), CUBIC congestion control for fast long-distance networks (RFC 9438), and Data Center TCP (RFC 8257). He has served on the program and organization committees of academic conferences including ACM SIGCOMM and USENIX NSDI.[4]
