Lars Johan Brodtkorb is a Norwegian competitive sailor and chess player from Trondheim who grew up in Horten. He began sailing the Optimist dinghy at the age of 8 and competed in the World Championships in Çeşme, Turkey in 2008 and in Niteroi Brasil in 2009. In Çeşme he finished on 37'th place and in Niterói he finished on 172'nd place. [1] [2] [3] [4] In the 2008 Open German Championship in Ribnitz-Damgarten he earned the silver medal.[5] [6]

In 2009 he switched to the Europe dinghy and has won the Norwegian Championship (NM) three times (2013, 2014, 2016) and silver two times (2011, 2012). [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

Internationally he won gold in the U19 European Championship in 2013, 2014 as well as the European Championship in 2021. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] In the World Championship for the Europe dinghy, he has won gold three times (2014, 2015, 2021), silver four times (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018) and bronze twice (2019, 2022).[21] [22] [23] [24]

In 2013 he also began sailing the Finn dinghy and has since won the Norwegian championship for it in 2014 and 2016 and the silver in 2013, 2015 and 2022.[25] [26] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31]


In 2015 Lars Johan Brodtkorb won his first bronze medal in the Finn Silver Cup.[32]

In 2017, he also started to sail the OK dinghy and became the first Norwegian to win the European Championship in Fåborg.[33] He also earned the bronze medal in the world championship in Marstrand in 2022.

In addition to his success in sailing, Lars Johan Brodtkorb is also a skilled chess player, particularly in four-player chess, where he competes under the pseudonym "Icystun". [34] He has had two opening moves named after him: the "Icystun-Kujtimi" defence and "Icystun-Rezacz" defense. [35] [36]

In 2018, he earned the bronze medal in the Four-player chess Teams World Championship with Abhinav Martha. The following year, he won the Teams World Championship with Dmitry Kononenko.[37] In 2020, he defended the title with his former partner Abhinav Martha,[38] however in 2021 he and Abhinav lost the final and got the silver medal. He has also won the Four-player chess Solo World Championship in 2020, 2021 and 2022.[39] [40]

Awards and honours

In recognition of his achievements, Lars Johan Brodtkorb has received several awards and honors. He was named the Norwegian Sailor of the Year in 2013,[41] and the Norwegian Youth Sailor of the Year in 2014.[42] Additionally, he received the Bragdmerket award in 2014 and 2015 for winning the World Championships in the Europe (dinghy).[41] In addition to the awards previously mentioned, Lars Johan Brodtkorb also received the "Lovisapokal" award from the Horten Idrettsråd for being Norway's most prominent sailor in 2014 and the Commodore Prize for being the best sailor of all international classes during the Kieler Woche 2018.
