Last Encounter is a Roguelike, Twin-stick, Action Shooter released on May 8, 2018 through Steam. The game revolves around a bodiless protagonist whose consciousness is transferred to a synthetic body by a scientist Daniel Connor in order to travel through the interdimensional portals in hope of saving what’s left of humanity from the alien invasion. The player assumes the role of the pilot and travels through procedurally generated galaxies in a classic top-down, twin-stick shooter manner, combining weapons and abilities to clear sectors and collect the portal keys needed to advance the story. The game was developed and published by Exordium games, an indie studio from Zagreb, Croatia currently consisting of 13 developers.

Gameplay[edit]

In Last Encounter player steps into the role of a nameless, bodiless pilot. Once the synthetic body has been chosen, the player has the further option to chose his starting ship. The statistics vary from ship to ship and from pilot to pilot, giving the player different starting options best suited to their playstyle (e.g. exchanging health and armor in favor of speed and maneuverability). Once chosen the player traverses procedurally generated galaxies in search for the keys to the interstellar portals and fighting off swarms of enemies. Once three keys per galaxy have been obtained player has the option to “jump” to another galaxy. The game is punishing by design, and in keeping with the rogue-like genre staples, where every death is permanent and reduces player back to the starting point. The weapons and upgrades collected, however, stay as part of player’s arsenal and player can collect many different weapon components and combine them into new firing modes acquiring advantage in earlier levels, effectively shortening their runs and time needed to advance further.

Plot[edit]

At the brink of the most important moment in human history, merely days before the announcement of the success of the project “Gilgamesh” that would grant the humanity practical immortality by personal virtualization, our solar system was invaded through the space-time portal, that opens near the Jupiter’s orbit, by a superior and violent alien race. After this devastating surprise attack, humanity is left almost completely destroyed, and its resources pillaged. As a desperate last try, one scientist, dr. Daniel Connor tries to save what is left of our kind, by using this newest technology that allows practical immortality. He uses a synthetic, engineered body and transfers an unknown consciousness into it creating a pilot to undergo a dangerous mission, with dr. Connor providing the logistics and useful information to the pilot. By conducting this mission, Daniel secretly hopes he will learn the fate of his beloved Lea Frost, who vanished leading the heroic, but doomed and desperate human counterattack to destroy the source of the portal from the other side. Following Lea through different galaxies, the pilot learns that human expedition succeeded in closing of the portal, but also learns about the deactivated Portal Network, and dr. Connor decides for pilot to traverse it, after finding clues indicating that his beloved Lea might still be alive. Traveling through different galaxies the pilot gathers fragments of the story of what happened to Lea and learns of the ultimate antagonist the Void. The Void is an entity of immense power, which is manipulating or violating all the galaxies’ inhabitants the pilot meets along the way. Void is the reason inhabitants of the universe sealed off the Portal Network trying to negate his dark influence. Following Lea’s footsteps, the pilot and dr. Connor can only observe, in disbelief, Lea’s change from the desperate hero of the humanity, to power-hungry avenger, greedy of other’s power, her fall of character and in the end - her, succumbing to the Void, having completely lost the faith in saving the human race, or ever seeing Daniel again. Lea’s fall fuels Daniel’s anger and commitment to reach her and rid her and the universe of Void’s influence. After reaching the Void, the pilot, guided by dr. Connor, succeeds in defeating the Void and reaching Lea’s heart. Daniel then succeeds to turn back Lea to humanity’s side by returning her faith and hope.
