Prof. Ungar Laszlo and Trainee Dr. Gabi Haran

Laszlo Ungar (1951) is a Hungarian gynecologist, an obstetrician which main practice is gynecological oncologist surgeries.

Personal life[edit]

A renowned surgeon of the field of gynecology oncology,[1] and father of 5 children [2]

Ungar, is a Jewish fifth-generation medical doctor. The education he received was German and he speaks the language as well as Hungarian, English, and Russian.[2]

The implications are reflected in the way he educates his trainees, whether he shows them how to treat a human or guerrilla female .[3] His trainees might quote the horses story- which Ungar used to describe their training: "When you want to teach a horse to jump, you must make him run in circles. All that horses want is to be left alone, but they have to learn that they will not rest until they run in a circle to your satisfaction. A horse that has learned to run in a circle to your satisfaction will jump up to 2 meters when you tell it to jump." Finishing his medical studies in 1975, young Ungár first served as a GP after which he started residency in pathology[2]. In 1980, his surgical fire led him to become a resident in the Semmelweis university hospital, in the gynecological department.[4]

At the end of the residency - and already a family man, he moved to England, then the capital of gynecological-oncology operations.[5]

He was the head of the Department of Gynecology in St. Stephen, where he established generations of surgeons, where he invented and performed surgeries such as abdominal radical trachelectomy - allowing pregnant women to continue their pregnancies despite the discovery of cancer. He invented the "Pouch Budapest" for women whose cancer had penetrated their bladder and had to undergo an excision to replace the bladder - and they could urinate normally.[6] Prof. Ungar works to this day in several hospitals in Hungary and around the world.[7]
