Latchable, Inc. (often referred to as Latch) is an American company making smart access systems that provides hardware and software to manage building access. The company has raised $96 million in venture capital.[1]

The company's headquarters are located in New York City.[2]

History[edit]

Latch was founded in 2014 by Luke Schoenfelder, Brian Jones, and Thomas Meyerhoffer.[3] Schoenfeider previously worked at Apple, cashing out his 401k to start the company.[4][5] A year later, the company joined the investment accelerator program of R/GA Ventures, powered by Techstars, in 2015.[6]

In February 2016, Latch announced that the company raised $10.5 million in Series A funding led by Lux Capital.[7] In May 2017, Latch raised another $10 million in Series A funding from RRE Ventures and existing investors.[8]

In August 2018, Latch raised $70 million in Series B financing from Brookfield Ventures.[9]

Partnerships[edit]

In July 2017, Latch announced a partnership with Jet. Jet installed 1,000 Latch R readers in buildings in New York City to make deliveries of packages easier and safer.[10] In October 2017, Latch announced its first unattended secure deliveries in NYC made through the Jet partnership.[11]

In November 2017, Latch partnered with the intercom company Comelit to improve automated and smart access to commercial buildings. The two companies propose a system which allows nonresidents to enter a building using a combination of a Comelit intercom panel and the Latch app[12]

In February 2018, Latch was announced as the exclusive provider of locks for Niido, the apartment-building startup supported by Airbnb, to be used for keyless entry for home sharing.[4]

In July 2018, Latch extended its partnership with UPS. The two companies run a program which allows UPS drivers to use Latch locks to leave packages in safe locations inside buildings.[13]

Products[edit]

Latch M, introduced in 2016, is a mortise lock with a deadbolt and an electronic reader that works with a smartphone, keycard or Doorcode.[14] The lock has a wide-angle camera that can provide a visual trail of door interactions.[15]

Latch R, introduced in March 2017, is an electronic access lock designed for apartment entrances, office glass doors, turnstiles and elevators, and other places where Latch M is not appropriate.[16]

Latch C, introduced in August 2017, electronic access lock designed to be installed on any door with a deadbolt.[17]

Latch's locks are popular among residents of new properties, with surveys showing that 86% of millennials are willing to pay one-fifth more for a smart apartment.[18]
