Laura Koch Lombard is an American entrepreneur and politician. She is the Democratic Party candidate for the United States House of Representatives from the 4th Congressional District of Kansas, which includes Wichita, Kansas, in the 2020 election. Lombard is a fifth-generation Kansan, related to the namesake of Mulvane, Kansas.

Early life and education[edit]

One branch of Lombard's family arrived in Kansas in the mid-1800s to start a milling business near Abilene, Kansas, which became a successful industrial equipment company.[1] Lombard's ancestor Joab R. Mulvane was instrumental in bringing the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway to south-central Kansas and is the namesake of Mulvane, Kansas.[2]

Lombard grew up in Wichita and attended The Independent School. She attended University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Studies and becoming a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society. At Johns Hopkins University, Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, she a Master of Arts degree in International Relations and Economics in 2010.[1]

Business career[edit]

After graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, Lombard joined The Cohen Group in Washington, D.C., headed by former United States Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen.[1][3]

Lombard founded MENA Consultants in November 2012 to promote international business development. She also founded ImEpik, an online workforce development company. She has consulted for the Clean Energy Business Council in Kansas and is a principal consultant at LKL Global Consulting.[1][3]

Political career[edit]

Lombard entered the Democratic special nominating convention for the 2017 Kansas's 4th congressional district special election. James Thompson was chosen.[4][5]

Lombard ran in the Democratic primary election for the 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in Kansas, seeking the 4th Congressional District seat in Kansas. She was defeated by James Thompson 65.2 to 34.8% (20,261 to 10,797 votes).[4][6]

As a result of the primary election on August 4, 2020 for the 2020 United States House of Representatives elections in Kansas, Lombard became the Democratic candidate for Kansas' 4th Congressional District. She has been endorsed by Kansas AFL-CIO.[4]

Personal life[edit]

Lombard and her husband had a son in October 2019.[1]
