Laura Perini
Laura Perini (died 25 August 2023)[1] was an Italian scientist and lecturer in nuclear and subnuclear physics.
Career
Beginning in 1990, she participated in numerous experiments at CERN and was involved in the design and preparation of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC collider, where she contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012.
Since 2005, she has been Professor of Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics at the State University of Milan - Department of Physics "Aldo Pontremoli".
She has been a member of the University's Board of Directors since 2019.
From 2013 to the end of 2018, she was the representative of the Directors of the Physics Department on the Board of Directors of ConScienze.
From 2012 to 2017, she was Director of the Faculty of Physics "Aldo Pontremoli" and a member of the Academic Senate.
In 2021, she was appointed by the Ministry of University and Research as the second Italian representative on the Steering Committee of the European Open Science Cloud Association.
Scientific activity
Laura Perini's studies focused on research in the field of experimental elementary particle and high-energy physics, including as a researcher at the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics[2].
As a participant in the ATLAS programme, Laura Perini focused on the computational problems posed by the extraordinary amount of data generated by the experiment:
- From 1999 to 2000, she was a member of the CERN LHC Computing Committee, the INFN Grid project and the DataGrid preparation group, which led to the choice of grid technology as the basis for the development of new software services for the LHC computing infrastructure.[2]
- At the same time, she was a collaborator in the DataGrid project, the first European Commission-funded project dedicated to realising innovative technical solutions for distributed scientific computing, the results of which were used internationally for more than a decade and laid the foundation for today's EGI infrastructure.
For 20 years, she held leading positions in all European Grid project series, such as DataTag and the EGEE project series, and worked on the consolidation of Grid middleware.[3]
Laura Perini was involved in activities to promote physics to young people. She was responsible for the University's Physics Department for the "Scientific Degrees" project, which aims to encourage high school students' interest in scientific subjects and physics in particular.
