Lauren Gardner

Dr. Lauren A. Gardner is a Senior Research Fellow and NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow within The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney.[1][2][3][4] She is currently also the Program Lead of School-Based Health Interventions at the University of Sydney.[1][2]

She has had significant impact on research into vaping, including leading the development of the OurFutures Vaping program, and its evaluation in the world's largest randomised controlled trial of a school-based digital intervention to prevent vaping (40 schools, >5,000 students).[1][5] Gardner's work on this trial, co-led with Professor Nicola Newton, has been found to reduce the likelihood of adolescent vaping by 65%, and has been applauded as one of the most successful school-based preventative strategies seen worldwide as of it's time.[5] Gardner also leads implementation research to drive large scale dissemination of the OurFutures health and wellbeing programs into schools both nationally and internationally.[1]

Gardner has authored 85 peer-reviewed publications (including 17 first-author and 28 senior-author papers).[6]

Career

Gardner holds a Bachelor of Psychology with first class Honours (2013) and PhD (2018) from University of Wollongong.[7][2][3][4] Her Bachelor dissertation explored “how implicit beliefs about the nature of athletic ability relate to competition anxiety in high level soccer players”.[7] Her PhD topic “explored how these beliefs, as well as key social figures, influence youth sports participants’ enjoyment, and in turn the decision to continue participating or drop out”.[7]

In 2018, Gardner began working in NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of New South Wales as a Research Program Officer on two digital-health projects for secondary school students.[7][8]

Later in 2018, she was promoted to Postdoctoral Research Fellow, by which time the centre had relocated to the University of Sydney and established itself under the new name of The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use.[7][4][9][10][8][11] In 2021 she moved to a Research Fellow role within the same centre, and in 2024 to Senior Research Fellow.[4]

She currently works as a Senior Research Fellow and NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow at the Matilda Centre, University of Sydney.[2] She leads the School-Based Health Interventions program, overseeing more than $16 million in funded research.[9] Her work centres on the development, evaluation and implementation of digital school-based health interventions designed to improve adolescent health outcomes.[12][5]

Earlier in her career, Gardner managed Australia’s largest randomised controlled trial of a school-based prevention program (Health4Life), involving over 6,600 students from 71 schools.[7] The not-for-profit OurFutures Institute was established as a joint venture with the University of Sydney to support the large-scale implementation of evidence-based digital health interventions in schools.[13] Initiatives delivered through the institute have supported students from over 1,400 high schools across Australia.[13] Dr Lauren A. Gardner has been a leading researcher on the Matilda Centre’s digital prevention programs — including those now distributed under the OurFutures brand — and has contributed to large-scale trials and dissemination efforts in Australian schools.[12]

Gardner has authored 85 peer-reviewed publications (including 17 first-author and 28 senior-author papers) and written one book chapter.[6]

Her research interests include school-based prevention, vaping and e-cigarette interventions, digital and eHealth approaches, co-occurring lifestyle risk behaviours, health promotion through sport and physical activity, substance use prevention and education, and mental health promotion.[1]
