Laurie Foon is a New Zealand fashion designer and advocate for sustainable businesses.[1] She founded the fashion design label Starfish in 1993. In 2017, Laurie ran for the Southern Ward by-election in Wellington.[2]
Early life and education
Foon was not formally educated in design or garment construction, but she spent her life immersed in the fashion industry. She left school in the early 1980s and worked at a Jewish tailoring business in central Wellington called Zimmy’s. At this job, she learned about garment construction.[3]
Career
Foon started the fashion label Jive Junkies in 1991 and sold garments at the Wakefield Markets in Wellington. The Starfish label was created in 1993, and a boutique was opened on Willis Street in Wellington. In 2003, Foon established the Laurie Foon label, which she sold alongside the Starfish label.[4]
