[Laurie Shapiro] (2012-Present) is an American installation and mixed media artist who lives and works in Los Angeles.[1]. Her large-scale, mixed-media installations invite the viewer into "another world where art becomes a living experience." [2]. Shapiro's "intensely beautiful rooms" and paintings are "meant to share a sense of peace and healing." Using patterns from plants, her work often references a oneness with nature. [3].
Biography
Shapiro lives and works in Los Angeles. She received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2012) and Bilkent University in Ankara Turkey (2011).[4][5] Notable solo shows include two with Radiant Space Gallery, and she has shown with Mars Gallery in Chicago. Her residencies include Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, and the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Shapiro has received awards such as, Artists’ Fellowship Grant, Center for Cultural Innovation Grant, and a Fellowship at American Jewish University. She has been publicly commissioned to create installation environments for Otherworld and Coffee World.[6][7] Her work is in the collections of the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles [8][9] and Bilkent University. [4][10] Shapiro has been interviewed by Nicholas Wilton for Art2Life for her immersive installation art.[11] In April 2021, Shapiro was commissioned by the City of San Luis Obispo with the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art to create an immersive outdoor installation called "Through The Flowers." The installation was part of a city program - plaza pop ups - and on display throughout the month of April. [12].
Notable Works
Alchemy Tunnel (2019) Was described in Artillery Magazine as “a literal and figurative cave of wonders. Using fabric, foil, sequins, and water-based paint, Shaprio’s inventive fantasy environment glitters and beckons. A distinct floral theme dominates the space, which is covered floor to ceiling with images and patterns that include lights and sparkles and sensual fabric.” [13]. Although Shapiro's work is initially made in her studio by hand, her immersive spaces often become collaborative in the sense that they give space to various events or performances. Her installation, Alchemy Tunnel was compared to an "ayahuasca tent" where "daydreams are encouraged." [14].
Before You Were Born (2018) Shapiro's work was first debuted in Los Angeles with Radiant Space Gallery. Her installation, "Before You Were Born" attracted thousands to see the floor to ceiling textile cave which she spent over 1000 hours creating. [15] "One could spend hours mesmerized by the details and visceral feelings evoked by the imagery." [16]. Pieces for the exhibition were almost all made in 2017. The space was entirely handmade by the artist. When shown at Radiant Space, the installation hosted a number of special events. [17]. On Lonny Magazine, the installation was featured alongside noted artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Janet Echelman, and Ai Weiwei. [18]. In addition, her paintings in this show were said to "mimic the gesticulations of symbolist painter Gustav Klimt." [19]
Before premiering in Los Angeles, Before You Were Born showed at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. "Every component is painted, printed, and stitched together in this cavelike environment whose form seamlessly recalls the notion of connectedness."[20]
