Law (Singer)

Lawand Marie Hill, who goes by the artist name Law (born January 16, 1998) is a singer/songwriter and social media personality/influencer from Kingston, New York, a small town by the Hudson River, about two hours north of New York City. After singing in school and church/gospel choirs, she decided to pursue a professional singing career straight out of high school. Law posted videos of herself singing cover songs on YouTube and reached out to New Jersey-based publishing and production company Water Music, who signed her in 2018 when she was 19 years old. The company has since started a label imprint, Sloppy Vinyl, to which Law is also signed.

After signing to Water Music, Law started attending songwriting sessions and worked with the vocal coach Troy Bell. She engaged in live band rehearsals and crafted a social media presence with Sloppy Vinyl’s social media team. She also recorded in the studio for the first time, writing her first single, “Gold” and shot an accompanying video in April 2019, causing hip-hop magazine The Source to name her “the artist to watch!” She subsequently released numerous other songs online including “Crystal Ball,” “Pedestal,” “Conspiracy Theory,” “Reciprocated,” and “Void.” In 2020 the singer stopped using her full first name of Lawand and started using the abbreviated moniker, Law.

In addition, Law started a Tik-Tok series, “Catching Cheaters,” in which she follows and confronts cheating boyfriends for her online followers. The series has so far garnered 100 million views and led to Law amassing 1.5 million followers on the popular social media platform. Law released another single “Over It” in the Spring of 2021, quickly followed by “Controller” in July 2021 with an accompanying video directed by Corey Hallam professionally known as wave change and shot at the James Ward Mansion in Westfield, New Jersey. The song received numerous favorable reviews on MTV, Power 105.1, SingersRoom.com, soultracks.com, and many more. Her new single, “Lies,” had received 2.9 million views on TikTok a week before its 9/23/21 release date.

Musical Influences Law is influenced by Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, and Tori Kelly amongst other artists.

Early Life Law started playing piano at 4 and guitar at 6 and discovered she could sing when she was 12. She joined her High School Choir in Kingston, NY, and soloed at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan during her senior year as part of the choir’s performance. Also while at High School, Law was a cheerleader and placed 3rd in a national competition. She also cheered individually in London for a New Year’s Day parade.

Musical Style Law’s musical style is sultry, youth-oriented R&B and she compares herself to Jhene Aiko, Sza, Ciara, Doja Cat, and Normani.

Hobbies Law is a vegan and an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. She also continues to practice piano and guitar while continuing to build her social media profile and record her TikTok series "Catching Cheaters."
