Lawrence Lekolwane is a Motswana film director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and producer. He is the Managing Director of Botswood Studios, one of Botswana's leading film and television production companies. With a career spanning over twenty years, he has been involved in the production of five feature films, seven television series, and multiple documentaries, and is recognised as a specialist in practical and natural lighting cinematography.[1]
Career
His television productions include Matsale (Africa Magic, 2010), and the long-running drama series Botshelo Jo, which aired across multiple seasons on BTV, YTV, and Africa Magic (2012, 2021–2023). He also directed the documentary The Dancing Gods of the Kalahari (2012), Lepodisi la Sephiri (Now Channel, 2014), Pelo e ja Serati (Now Channel, 2015), and The President's Daughter (2018).[1]
Botswood Studios secured a three-year contract with BTV for Botshelo Jo, establishing it as one of Botswana's most prominent locally produced drama series. In 2023 Lekolwane announced the development of a new reality television format titled My Golden Bash, a program celebrating the lives of Batswana elders aged 70 and above, featuring family tributes, party preparation, and a wisdom-sharing segment modelled on traditional African storytelling practices. He also announced a planned collaboration with Zimbabwean cinematographer Umsebenzi ka Blaqs for a Zimbabwean edition of the format.[2]
Education
Lekolwane completed his early studies at Materspei College (1998–1999) and began a Diploma in Computer Studies at the University of Botswana (2000–2001) before pursuing a career in media. He later enrolled at AFDA Film School, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture Medium between 2019 and 2021.[1]
