Lazarus Kgagudi
Lazarus kgagudi (3 January 1951-1995) known by fans as the “Silver Fox,” was a celebrated South African musician during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1]
Early life
Seraki Lazarus Kgagudi was born on 3 January 1951-1995)[2] in Mohlaletse, Ga-Sekhukhune, [3]South Africa.He didn't begin life blind, he lost his sight after a bicycle accident in his young age.[4]
Education
Kgagudi received his formal education at the Siloe School for the Blind, [5]where he developed his musical talents and connected with fellow blind musician Steve Kekana, who would also become the best in South African music.
Career
Lazarus Kgagudi's music blended Afro-pop, disco, and township pop,rhythm, melodic vocals, and lyrics that resonated with township audiences and beyond. Some of his most memorable songs include “Makarapa”, “Xipitifaya”, and the Motown-influenced “I'll Never Give You Up”.[3]
Kgagudi worked with notable producers such as Phiri Motale and Emil Zoghby, and collaborated with backing bands including the Black Cat Trio, The Neighbours, and Step Ahead.[3]
Recognition
Lifetime Achievement Award 2003.[6]
