Le Sirenuse is a family-run luxury boutique hotel located in Positano, on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Established in 1951, the hotel is housed in an 18th-century palazzo and is widely recognized for its historical role in the development of Positano as an international tourism destination. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
History
The property was originally "Villa Giulietta," the summer residence of the Sersale family, a Neapolitan aristocratic family. In 1951, siblings Aldo, Paolo, Anna, and Franco Sersale converted the villa into a small, eight-room hotel. At the time of its founding, Paolo Sersale was serving as the Mayor of Positano.
The hotel gained significant international attention following a 1953 visit by the American novelist John Steinbeck. In an essay for Harper's Bazaar, Steinbeck described the property as "an old family house converted into a first-class hotel, spotless and cool." This publication is credited by historians as a pivotal moment that introduced the Amalfi Coast to a global audience.[1][2]
The hotel remains under the management of the Sersale family, currently led by Antonio Sersale.
Architecture and Design
Le Sirenuse is noted for its distinctive "Pompeian red" exterior. The interior design avoids traditional commercial hotel aesthetics, instead utilizing the Sersale family’s private collection of antiques, 17th-century paintings, and Neapolitan craftsmanship.
Key architectural features include:
- Vietri Tiles: Most rooms feature traditional hand-painted ceramic tiles from Vietri sul Mare.
- The Spa: Designed by the renowned Italian architect Gae Aulenti, the spa focuses on modern glass and teak wood elements.
- La Sponda: The hotel’s primary restaurant is known for its traditional Mediterranean architecture and evening illumination provided by over 400 hand-lit candles.
In Popular Culture
The hotel has served as a filming location for several international cinematic productions:
- Only You (1994): The romantic comedy starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. features the hotel’s pool terrace and dining areas extensively during the film's Italian sequences.
- Spring Summer (2013): An artistic short film directed by Johan Lindquist and Caspar Kemball, featuring Delfine Bafort, Luciana Frazzetto, and Ashley Smith, was shot entirely on-site to showcase the property's aesthetic and fashion culture.
- Documentary Shorts: The hotel has commissioned various short-form films documenting regional craftsmanship and the daily operations of the hospitality staff.
