History[edit]

The Leawood Police Department was formed on January 18, 1949. The agency was formed when Robert E. Combs became the cities first chief of police. The first officers hired on were non paid volunteers who wanted to help there community.

By 1971 the city had gradually started paying patrol officers, and had grown to 14 full time sworn officers under the chief of police at the time Chief Martin J. Kelly.

As the city grew more and more people the department adjusted and hired more officers. In 1986 the agency had reached 26 officers, 6 civilians and 1 dispatcher.

Now the agency has around 60 officers. Currently the Leawood Police Department has officers enrolled in the Johnson County Regional Police Academy who following their graduation will join the agency raising the amount of officers hired. [1]
