Introduction[edit]

Leena Das is an Indian actress who acted in over 150 Indian movies in various languages mainly in 1970s and 80s.[1] She was a simple person in real life. Considering that she would attend mass at Mahim church regularly[2] and one of her images shows her wearing a cross, suggests that she could be from the Catholic Christian community.

Early Life[edit]

Leena Das is estimated to be born around 1959 [3][2]  at Mumbai in a progressive family. She was credited in bollywood initially either as Leena, Leena Roy, Leena D’souza or Leena Das and eventually in most movies as Leena Das.[4] Leena is believed to be a disciple of Gopi Kishan and started dancing at the age of 4.[5] Her Kathak dancing talent is seen in a number of Bollywood movies like Gaddaar (1973), Vardi, Ayaash etc. Her big break came in a cameo, part of Kahani Kismat Ki (1973) directed by Arjun Hingorani.[2]

Career Overview[edit]

She was cast in mostly "A" listed movies, had limited screen time besides dance sequences and in most cases minimal or without any dialogue.

Following are some possible reasons for her career to progress this way:

  • Studying in a convent school gave her a good command over English which helped during her stage shows abroad[1]
  • Limited command over local languages[1]
  • She commanded a higher price for her work as compared to her contemporaries[2]
  • Had the ability to perform various dance genres and showed almost no weight gain in a career of around 30 years in the Indian film industry[6][7][8][9]

Career Analysis[edit]

She appeared in over 150 movies in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada (and maybe more languages perhaps).[6][7][8][9] Her peak years were 1984-1985 with at least 37 movies.

Leena's performances in movies can be categorized as:

  • Item number only
  • A few sequences interacting with other actors mostly followed by an item number.
  • At the behest of the villain, plotting to defame or cause harm to the hero while accusing him of forcing a relationship. Then after the truth is uncovered, humiliated by the hero.
  • Seeking the love of hero and being rejected

Snippets[edit]

Leena is believed to have been away from movies in and around 1986 for a short period due to a marriage and divorce with Shahid Rafi.[10][11][12]

Leena performed in stage shows in India and abroad and was also popular in the New Year celebration shows.[13][14][15][16]

During her career Leena stayed at Santacruz in Bombay.[17]

Leena had and continues to have a huge fan following even today. Her appearance on posters for the film as well as audio cassette tapes and Vinyl LP records boosted the value.

People on the sets used to respond in double meaning but that never let her upset her as she gave her best with a smile on her face always.

Showing a trend of those times, in her roles in Aitbaar, Hukumat, and Ghabhrahat she was shown smoking a cigarette. She did better acting in the third movie of smoking a cigarette than previous two attempts but still suggested she was a novice at it. In the movie Lashkar she was shown smoking pot again suggesting she was novice at it.

The producer of a movie was trying to shoo away a reporter who was interviewing Leena, however she stood for the reporter showing she was sensitive, considerate and gutsy by nature.[18]

One of Leena's  trademark steps was effortlessly raising one leg while dancing to the height of her chin maintaining perfect balance suggesting she could have been from a family with a rich tradition in football.
