Legacy Landscapes Fund, also known in German as Internationaler Naturerbe Fonds; abbreviated as LLF, is a foundation providing long-term financial support to important conservation areas in the Global South. The fund was founded in 2020 as part of efforts to reduce the biodiversity financing gap within a post-2020 framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The fund was launched on 19 May 2021, and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Grant program

Legacy Landscapes Fund operates a grant program that provides long-term financing for terrestrial biodiversity conservation. It offers grants of USD 1 million per year, for at least fifteen years,[3][4] for up to 30 conversation areas with a combined area exceeding 60,000 km2 (23,000 sq mi)[5] in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The first seven pilot projects were launched in Zimbabwe,[6], Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo,[7] Angola, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Bolivia.[8] In September 2021 it was reported that LLF would receive funds for the Iona National Park in Angola and the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.[9] In summer of 2022, it was reported that LLF would support the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.[10][11][12]

Background

Legacy Landscapes Fund was established following a global biodiversity summit in Kunming, China in October 2020 as an independent charitable foundation under German law by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and KfW Development Bank (KfW) in December 2020.[13][14] Its establishment was supported by Agence Française de Développement (AFD),[15] Campaign for Nature (CfN), Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).[6]

Funding

Legacy Landscapes Fund secures its funding from both public and private donors.[16][17] The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development kick-started the fund with EUR 82.5 million.[18][19][20]Previously, it was reported that the BMZ's contribution in 2021 would be EUR 115 million.[21] The first USD 100 million were invested by May 2021.[8] The long-term goal for the fund is to obtain a capital of USD 1 billion by 2030.[22][18] In May 2022, German newspaper Rhein-Zeitung reported that the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development invested an additional EUR 100 million into the LLF.[23] France announced in 2021 that it would support the LLF starting in 2022.[24] As of May 2022, the aforementioned German Federal Ministry invested a total of EUR 182.5 million into the LLF.[25]

Organisational structure

Legacy Landscapes Fund is made up of a supervisory board, a management board, and a small operational staff. Stefanie Lang is the LLF's executive director.[26]
