Personal

Bahr was born in Baltimore to Leonard Bahr and Florence Riefle Bahr, noted local artists. He was married three times. His daughter, Emilie, was born to his second wife, Carolyn Leftwich, in 1980. Emilie is married to Beaux Jones and has two children. In later life, Bahr fell ill with scleroderma and died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[1] [2]

Career and Advocacy

After his graduation from Georgia, Bahr joined the faculty of LSU in 1973 for research on coastal topics. After a hiatus in which he promoted running, he joined the state Department of Natural Resources in 1990 under Governor Buddy Roemer and continued in state government until his retirement in 2008. In his state positions, he concentrated on advocating measures that would slow or reverse the land loss in the America’s Delta due to subsidence exacerbated by wetland damage caused by oil and gas exploration. He was instrumental in the formation of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. After retirement from the state government, he continued his advocacy, founding a blog called Louisiana Coast Post[3]
