Leonard George Weaver
Leonard George Weaver, or Len Weaver, (Detroit, December 21, 1915 - Laurel, June 18 1995) was an American postwar and contemporary artist. Most of his work is comprised of drawings, watercolors and acrylics done in Germany during and after World War II. His signature style was the front to back painting -- since he could not afford to buy paper for multiple paintings.[1].
During his life, Leonard became close friends with artist Martin Frey[2], and they painted and did exhibitions together in Bonn and Bad Gotesberg, Germany, during the late 40's and early '50s[3]
In late 2015, a collection of 100 sketches and 500 watercolors was uncovered by his son, John Weaver, in his father’s resting place.
Life and Work
Leonard George Weaver was born on December 21, 1915, as Leonard Nesbitt Ely in Detroit, Michigan. After his mother, Edith May Henry, passed in a house fire, his father, Jessie Byron Ely, was unable to support the children, so Leonard and his two brothers were sent to an orphanage. In 1917, when he was two years old, he was adopted by the family of Milton and Pearl Weaver with the blessing and full permission of Jessie and the Court. His legal name, then, was changed to Leonard George Weaver on November 9th, 1917.
The first drawings, sketches and paintings signed by Weaver are dated from the late 1940s in Germany, during the time that he served as a soldier in the US army. After the war ended in 1945, he and his close friend, the architect and artist Martin Frey, did exhibitions, parties and gatherings in Martin's studio, and during that time, the water motif[4] became the main theme in Weaver's painting.
He received an Honorable discharge from the Army in 1947, but stayed in Germany until 1958, working as a logistics personnel cataloguing and returning the materials that were sent to Germany from the war.
He came back to the United States to Maryland in 1958 with his four-year-old son, John Weaver, where he presented his work in local art shows in the city of Laurel, and where he was an instructor for the local Watercolor Studies Group in Laurel’s citizen’s association. After his passing on June 19, 1995, in Laurel, Maryland, his son and wife, Maria Angela, are responsible for his collection.
