Leonard Butman (born August 18, 1943) in the then Soviet Union is an author who was born in the middle of WWII. His debut book, LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE – the truth about Socialism[1] describes the prison-like life in the Soviet Union and how it affected many of its residents.
Early life
Butman was born on August 18, 1943, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Russia), which at that time faced a blockade from the Germans in the middle of WWII. Because of the struggles caused by the German blockade, Butman's family managed to escape from Leningrad.
After the war, Leonard and his family returned to the city of Leningrad (now St-Petersburg). The family received a temporary place in the dormitory of the textile factory. That “temporary” living lasted for 5 years, until in 1950 the government gave them a small, but separate room in the communal apartment, where 8 families shared a kitchen and a small bathroom.
The victory over Germans in the Eastern Front did not bring freedom to the Soviets and this led to further political oppression targeted at most Soviet families. At that period, the suffering of the Soviet citizens motivated Butman, who saw the victims suffer, to write his book Life without parole -truth about Socialism.
Education and Career
In 1960, Leonard finished high school and was admitted to the prestigious Leningrad Polytechnical Institute. While studying at the university, Leonard started to write short stories, which became his passion for life. They mostly were short humorous pieces about simple people like taxi drivers, waitresses, plumbers, bus attendants etc. Leonard said that short stories written by Andrei Chekhov and O. Henry were extremely inspirational for him. During his life, Leonard wrote more than 200 short stories. He finished university in 1966 with the diploma of a Master’s degree in Automation Engineering for Metallurgical industry. As a young engineer, he participated in the construction of the world’s largest metallurgical plants located in the following cities: Bhilai (India), Novolipetsk (Russia), Željezara Zenica (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and other industrial sites. During 1968 to 1970, Leonard was involved in the Soviet Armed Forces. He gained some knowledge of the Soviet Army, which led him to write a novel “SO LONG AWOL OF PRIVATE ABRAMOVICH”. In 1976, Butman immigrated to the USA because he wanted to escape the prison-like regime in the Soviet Union and Socialist slavery from childhood. He started to work as a taxi driver and delivering pizza. Later he learned English at Miami Dade College and for many years was working as an Electrical engineer.
