Leonard Weiss is an Australian conductor and educator. He was the first Australian[1] to be appointed as the 2022 New Zealand assistant conductor-in-residence,[2] where he was mentored by Giordano Bellincampi and worked with all major orchestras in New Zealand. Weiss is a participant in the 2023–2024 Australian Conducting Academy where he conducts all professional orchestras in Australia and is mentored by Johannes Fritzsch.[3]

Notable performances with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra include the New Zealand premiere[4] of Zhou Tian's Gift,[5][6] the world premiere of Maori composer David Mason's Tuki Manava for orchestra and Pacific Island drums,[7] and The Princess Bride in Concert. His debut with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra included Kiwi favourite Badjelly the Witch.[8] Weiss also worked as the assistant conductor for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's mid-year festival with Hilary Hahn and conductor Gemma New.

In 2021–2022 Weiss held the inaugural NSW Orchestral Conductor (Early Career) Fellowship, funded by Create NSW, which saw him work closely with Sydney Youth Orchestras.[9] This culminated in a main stage performance with their flagship orchestra and marimba soloist Claire Edwardes OAM, performing works by Ella Macens, Leonard Bernstein, and the Australian premiere of Kevin Puts' Marimba Concerto in its revised orchestration.[10]

Weiss studied conducting with Marin Alsop at Peabody Conservatory, where he made his opera debut conducting Kaija Saariaho's opera Émilie. At Peabody, Weiss participated in conducting masterclasses with Gianandrea Noseda and the National Symphony Orchestra.[11] He also studied opera coaching with Eileen Cornett and arts leadership with Dean Fred Bronstein. In 2020 Weiss received Peabody's Rising Star award and was named the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's BSO-Peabody Fellow for the 2020–21 season.[12]

Some of Weiss' notable awards include receiving the 2020 Mr and Mrs Gerald Frank New Churchill Fellowship,[13] the AAF/Faber Young Conductors Fellowship,[14] and an Australia Council Arts Grant.

Weiss grew up in Canberra, where he remains artistic director of the Canberra Sinfonia. In recent years he has returned to conduct Così fan tutte with National Opera. Previously he was music director of the Canberra Youth Orchestra and National Capital Orchestra. Weiss was named the 2016 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year for Youth Arts and Multimedia and was an ACT finalist for 2016 Young Australian of the Year.[15]
