Leonid Kossman ( German Leonid Kossmann, Russian Леонид Косман; September 24, 1915, Moscow - January 22, 2010, New York ) - Soviet-American linguist, philologist, Germanist; author of textbooks on German phraseology, English usage and grammar for Russian speakers; journalist (in exile).[1]

Biography

In 1918, his family emigrated from Bolshevik Russia to newly independent Latvia. From the age of two he spoke three languages - Russian, German and Latvian. After graduating from a German gymnasium, he studied at the Latvian University; at the same time he worked as a theater critic for the Latvian newspaper Cīņa. At the end of June 1941, he managed to escape Latvia three days before the occupation of Riga by the Nazi army. All the remaining members of his family, including his wife Teresa Jacobi and mother Ruth Brenson, died in The Holocaust in Riga.[1]

In 1941 he was drafted into the Red Army; On July 27, 1942, near Staraya Russa, he was seriously wounded in the head. To remove the bullet, craniotomy was performed, without anesthesia. As a result of the injury, the right side of his body was partially paralyzed; spent two years in Alma-Ata, where he gradually overcame the consequences of his injury and began to walk without the aid of a cane.

After the war, he studied at The Faculty of Philology of Moscow University, completed his postgraduate studies. For many years he taught German language and literature at the Institute of Foreign Languages Maurice Torez. In 1952 he married Maya Borisovna Sternberg, a botanist (June 24, 1920 - February 22, 2016). During this period, his articles on German philology and two textbooks for German students were published. (The first, Deutsche Phraseologie, published in 1964, was his Ph.D. thesis). They have become classic textbooks for several generations of students studying German in all regions of the Soviet Union.[1]

With his wife and two children, he emigrated to the United States through Israel in 1972. Taught German at the University of Haifa (Israel, 1972–1973); taught German language and literature at Keyes University of the Western Reserve Region in Cleveland (Ohio, 1973–1974). After moving to New York, he worked as a journalist; he collaborated with both Russian-language - "Novoye Russkoye Slovo" (New York), "Novyi Amerikanets" (New York), "Ruskaya Mysl" (Paris), and with German-language newspapers – “Staatszeitung” and “Aufbau”. His articles in German-language newspapers were signed with his initials (“L. K. ") and with a pen name Robert Herzenberg; in Russian-language newspapers he used a different pen name, “K. Freeman”. With rare exceptions, the only articles he signed with his full name were the ones in his Entertaining English series in the newspaper Novoye Russkoe Slovo.[2] In the late 1970s, he wrote six textbooks of English usage and grammar, which became very popular among Russian speakers. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, pirated - that is, not accredited - editions of his books numbered millions of copies.[3]
