Leonidas Rafaelian

Leonidas Rafaelian (Born in Athens in 1942) is a well known violinmaker in Cremona since 1991, when he moved to Italy and became an apprentice of Maestro Gio Batta Morassi at his workshop. Four years later he finished the International Violin Making School of Cremona with the guidance of Maestro Giorgio Scolari.

Playing the violin from the age of seven he graduated from viola at the Conservatory of Yerevan, Armenia. He then performed with the Radio Telelvision symphonic orchestra of Yerevan and with the symphonic orchestra of Miskolc, Hungary.

Since his viloin making career he has participated in various violimaking competitions, including the 1998 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and in 1999 and 2001 at the National competition in Baveno (Italy) with silver medals.

He has studied at length how best to marry beauty, tone, smoothness and acoustic intensity. His stringed instruments are widely prized for their harmony of form, their aesthetic beauty, the transparence of his varnishes, the sound, the profound timbre, the great care of details, the delicate scroll.

He has collaborated with many famous musicians the most important of which is Mstislav Rostropovich.

Leonidas Rafaelian is member of the Antonio Stradivari Consortium of Violin Makers, as well as the Italian Violin Making Association (ALI). He currently operates a workshop in the centre of Cremona.
