Lesley Ewen is a British actress, theatre maker, presenter, and drama instructor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She has also taught at Identity School of Acting and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Early life and education[edit]

Ewen was born in Lambeth, London[1] to a Scottish mother, a doctor of biochemistry, and a Jamaican father, head chemist at a private research college in the UK and at the Jamaican Racing Commission. Her stepfather was from Echt, Aberdeenshire. Ewen spent much of her youth in Australia and Canada.[2]

Ewen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies from York University in in 1979. She then trained at the Vancouver Playhouse Acting School, under the direction of David Latham, graduating in 1983. After returning to England, she obtained a Master of Arts in Performance Making from Goldsmith's, University of London in 2013.[3][4]

Career[edit]

After graduating, she began her career in Canadian theatre.

In Canada, she performed at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, The Citadel, Theatre Calgary, ATP, The Globe, Manitoba Theatre Centres, the Vancouver Playhouse, and more. She also performed at various venues in Europe, including London's Arcola (The Glass Menagerie) and The Park (African Gothic). Ewen is a a founding member of Leaky Heaven Circus, which for over a decade created award-winning devised works, performed in theatres, circus tents and outdoor environments.[5] She starred in the 1990 production of Othello at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre, which inspired Ewen to want to return home to England in the future.[6]

From 1992 to 1994, Ewen hosted The Beat, a music interview programme on CBC Radio, as well as a weekly music panel with Allan Gregg, Terry David Mulligan, and Laurie Brown. Ewen is also a produced playwright (Camera Obscura (hungry ghosts), an understanding of brown and The Relationship Book of the Dead), an award winning theatre director, dramaturg/story editor, Live artist, photographer, and Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) where she teaches Actor Resilience (Mindfulness + Meditation), Improvisation, Devising and Scene Study.

As an actress, Ewen appeared twice on The Outer Limits and four times on The X Files, on Stargate, Millennium, Dead Zone, Twilight Zone, V, Arrow and most recently on Doctor Who and The Witcher.[7]

Personal life[edit]

Ewen returned to London in 2012,[8] where she now lives in East London.[9] She opposed the Lea Bridge Gasworks development in Leyton, stating she supports new housing that benefits the local Waltham Forest community, "but this does not" and is for foreign investors and Berkeley shareholders instead despite Berkeley's poor environmental record.[10] She has a long-term meditation practice; has worked on Ken Wilber’s Integral project, and has studied meditation with various teachers, including Swami Shyam in Kullu Himachal Pradesh.
