Lev V. Eppelbaum

Lev Vilen Eppelbaum (in Russian: Лев Вилен Эппельбаум) born in 1959 in Tbilisi, Georgia, is an Israeli scientist and geophysics professor known for his works in geophysics, gravity, magnetics[1], and thermics, geodynamics, atmospheric, and environmental sciences. Since 2005, he has been working as a Research Professor at Tel Aviv University. In 2020, he was appointed as an Honorary Professor at Azerbaijan State Oil & Industry University [2]. He is also a Foreign Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences[3] and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS). He was featured in the list of 70 Russian-speaking Jews who shaped Israel, published by the Jerusalem Post and the Genesis Philanthropy Group[4] .

Professor Eppelbaum has authored about 450 publications, including 12 books and more than 195 articles. Besides this, he is author of several dozen popular scientific publications, including about 20 articles in the Azerbaijani newspaper "Bakunian Worker" (in Russian: Бакинский Рабочий), published by the Azerbaijan President's administration, and "Caspian" (Global Media Group, Baku, Azerbaijan), e.g.: [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]


He is also a member of the Editorial Board of ANAS Transactions Earth Sciences journal (ISSN: 2663-0419 (electronic version) ISSN: 2218-8754 (print version), and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Geology, Geophysics, and Earth Sciences journal (ISSN (E): 2835-8082), and Associate Editor of Geophysical Instrumentation, Methods, and Data Systems (European  Geosciences Union). He currently serves as a Member of the Editorial Board of several journals, including The Open Petroleum Engineering Journal (Bentham Science Publisher), Academia Green Energy (academia.edu), Geosciences (Switzerland) (MDPI), ANAS Proceedings, Earth Sciences, Positioning (SCIRP), and Archaeological Discovery (SCIRP).

Early life and education

Lev Eppelbaum was born in 1959 in Tbilisi, Georgia, the son of Vilen Mark Eppelbaum (1936-2022), PhD in inclined well drilling, geologist, and Esfir Leib Eppelbaum née Grabovetsky (1935-1986), MSc in Russian language and literature, teacher.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Oil & Industry University, receiving an MSc Degree in geophysics. He continued his studies at the Institute of Geophysics of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences and Moscow State Mining Academy, receiving a PhD in Geophysics.

During his scholarship years, Lev Eppelbaum was a chess team member (1975-1978) with G. Kasparov, playing against A. Karpov, and V. Kortchnoi. He was a chess champion and vice-champion of Baku in 1982-1983.

Scientific and academic career

From 1982 to 1990, Eppelbaum worked as a senior researcher in the laboratory of gravity and magnetics at the Institute of Geophysics in Baku. He focused on processing and interpreting potential geophysical fields in complex environments and analyzing thermal/pressure data in wells. He earned an MSc from Oil & Gas University in Baku and a PhD from the Institute of Geophysics in Tbilisi. He completed his postdoctoral studies in the Department of Geophysics at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. L. Eppelbaum's scientific interests cover potential (magnetic, gravity, thermal, electric, and self-potential) and quasi-potential geophysical field analysis in complex geological and geophysical environments, integrated geophysical and geological data interpretation, and tectonic, geodynamic, and paleomagnetic reconstructions. His studies include analysis of nonlinear geophysical processes, archaeological and environmental investigations, and searching for economic minerals. As a faculty member, he participated in several dozen of scientific bi-national workshops. Lev Eppelbaum was elected a chairperson of 27 scientific sessions at International geophysical, geological, and environmental conferences.
