Levasseur Rum
Levasseur Rum is a brand of rum produced in the Seychelles.[1].
Levasseur Rum was launched in April 2019 by Seychellois entrepreneur Marco Francis[2] and blends this spirit at Au Cap on the southern part of Mahé. He recruited Mauritian master blender Frederic Bestel to create a spirit “that was both gourmet and elegant”.[3]
History
Rum was first introduced to the Seychelles in the mid 16th century by the British Navy. It was a prosperous time for commerce, and ships frequently navigated across the Indian Ocean. This led to pirates becoming interested in the region and they seized shiploads of precious goods, silver and gold[1].
The Seychelles archipelago was the ideal hideout for them and their riches. Legend says that pirate Olivier Levasseur[4] hid his treasure somewhere on Mahé Island, and that even more immense treasures were buried in Frégate Island[5].
The rarer occurrence of ships led to sugar cane cultivation in the late 1800s, to supplement the infrequent supply of sugar. Over time, the use of sugar evolved, leading first to a fermented cane juice known as ‘Baka’[6].
Naming process
Levasseur Rum is named after the infamous 18th Century pirate, Olivier Levasseur, who was noted for his elegance and taste for fine food and drink [7].
Levasseur, also known as 'The Buzzard'[8] terrorised the high seas looting the treasure ship of the Bishop of Goa[9] with its fabulous, and still undiscovered, treasure that he then concealed somewhere among the rocks of Bel Ombre in north Mahé.
Distillation process and profile
Levasseur Rum is blended in small batches and uses a process of being aged in antique barrels[10] alongside shards of barrel-wood, infused with flavours such as Roasted Walnut, Vanilla, Cinnamon and Whiskey,[11] whilst carrying aromas of Oak, Vanilla and Caramel, drawing from the surroundings of its homeland of Seychelles[3]
Marco Francis does the blending process of each small batch by himself before bottling to ensure that the recipe remains a secret.[12]
