Leyla Aliyeva (Azerbaijani: Leyla İlham qızı Əliyeva, born 3 July 1985) is the first daughter of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.

Early Life[edit]

Leyla Aliyeva was born in Moscow on 3 July 1985.[1] From 2006 to 2008, Aliyeva pursued a master's degree at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-MSIIR; also the alma mater of her father).

Career[edit]

Leyla Aliyeva is Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation,[2] a charity run by the Aliyev ruling family in Azerbaijan.[3][4] She is editor-in-chief of style magazine Baku, launched in London in 2011.[5]

In 2008, Leyla Aliyeva launched the social initiative “Justice For Khojaly” – a campaign on behalf of the bereaved and those left destitute as a result of the Khojaly massacre.[6]

Leyla Aliyeva has been involved in efforts to promote Azerbaijan in Russia.[7][8] In 2011 Leyla Aliyeva launched the International campaign International Dialogue for Environmental Action.[9]

In July 2011, the Taraggi (Progress) Medal was conferred on Aliyeva for her contributions to the development of Azerbaijan–Russia relations.[10] In 2012, Aliyeva was awarded the medal “For Merits Before the Astrakhan Oblast".[11] In 2013, she was decorated with Order of St. Olga 3rd Grade of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was awarded the “For Services to Volgograd Region” Prize. In 2015, Aliyeva was awarded the Pushkin Medal of the Russian Federation.[12] During that year, she was conferred the title of Goodwill Ambassador of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.[13] In 2016, Leyla Aliyeva received a diploma of Honorary Professor at Moscow State University,[14] and a "Medal of Merit" from Moscow State International Relations Institute's Scientific Council.[15]

Ali and Nino[edit]

She was the executive producer of Ali and Nino, while it was written by British screenwriter Christopher Hampton and directed by British filmmaker Asif Kapadia. Based on the novel of the same name by an Azerbaijani writer, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016.[16]

Environmental Work[edit]

Aliyeva is an advocate of protecting the environment. She believes in the importance of sustainable fashion, art and education.[17][18][19]

In July 2011, Aliyeva launched her organization International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA), an international environmental NGO. The organization works to promote awareness and education of environmental issues, searching for possible solutions and acting on them, and collaborating with the youth.[20][21]

In April 2013, Aliyeva received an honorary order award for environmental protection from the International Environmental Project Olympiad in Baku.[22]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

  • 2011 - Received the Key to Life award of the Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation(CCBF) in New York.[23]
  • 2012 - Received Special International Honorary Award for Environmental Protection at the 6th International Environmental Project Olympiad (Inepo-Euroasia) held on April 6-7 in Baku.[24][25]

Personal Life[edit]

Leyla Aliyeva is the mother of three children: Ali, Mikail and Amina.[26]

In May 2015 Leyla Aliyeva announced through Instagram that she had divorced Agalarov. Agalarov wrote: "We remain friends and continue to raise our children together".[27]
