Li Schoolland (Chinese: 荔 赵 斯库兰德; pinyin: Li Zhào Schoolland; born 1958) is a Chinese, American Libertarian activist.[1] Li Zhao Schoolland is the Acton Institute, Director of External Relations Asia Pacific.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Li Zhao was born in Tianjin, China, her father was a surgeon and her mother was an English Professor in China[4] She graduated from Tianjin Foreign Language Institute, with a degree in Japanese language. She became a teacher for few years in China and received a Master of Arts in Japanese Literature from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Science in Japanese Business Studies from Chaminade University of Honolulu.[5][6][7]

Escape from China and Communism[edit]

In 1984 Li Zhao left the People's Republic of China as a survivor of Mao Zedong’s horrific Cultural Revolution communist regime, Between 1958 and 1962 his Great Leap Forward project led to the deaths of approximately 45 million Chinese, by far the largest mass murder ever recorded. For 26 years she lived in China under the harsh conditions of the Communist leadership, her first 18 years under the horrors of the Mao Zedong regime in China. Li is dedicated to tell her personal horror story in a communist country, warns the rest of the world about the evils of communist ideas, and promotes liberal ideas.[8][9][5]

Libertarian activism[edit]

She realized that to work for freedom and liberty globally she would approach liberal organizations to teach and train people in Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North Africa. Li Zhao translated the literature from the English to Mandarin Chinese and publications. She was the organizer of Liberty International World Conferences [10][11]

Li Zhao and her husband Ken Schoolland started Austrian School Free Market Show with the IAPP-Cathay Institute for Pacific Affairs in China major 8 city's Beijing, Chengdu, Dali, Lijiang, Guilin, Yongzhou, and Shanghai. She made presentations about her life in China for the Atlas Networks Africa Liberty Forum in Nairobi, Kenya [12] she is the founder of Shanghai Austrian Economic Summit 2012, 2014 in china.[13] She participated in the Economic and Legal Studies Organization Tolerance and Prosperity Caravan and represented the Action Institute in Afghanistan[14]
