Liana Ruppert is an American video game journalist widely recognized for her enthusiasm for games developed by the Canadian studio BioWare.[1][2][3][4] Over the course of her career, she has held several notable editorial positions, including Director of Editorial at Greenlit Content[5] and Managing Editor at Comicbook.com.[2] She went on to serve as Editor-in-chief of Prima Games[6][7] during the company's 2019 transition from traditional print publishing to digital guides and online news coverage. As of September 2020,[8] Ruppert serves as an Associate Editor for Game Informer.
While reviewing the 2020 video game Cyberpunk 2077, Ruppert—who has photosensitive epilepsy—experienced a grand mal seizure triggered by one of the game's braindance sequences.[9][10] The sequence in question featured rapid red and white flashing lights, which were described as closely resembling intermittent photic stimulation, a method neurologists use specifically to induce seizures in controlled clinical settings.[9][11] Following the incident, developer CD Projekt Red reached out directly to Ruppert[10][12] and went on to make significant changes to the potentially hazardous sequence in order to reduce the risk to other players.[13][14]
