Libby Geist[edit]

Libby Geist is an American television executive and producer known for her contributions to the field of sports documentary filmmaking. Geist has developed and produced a number of critically-acclaimed documentary series and films, such as the 2017 documentary film O.J.: Made in America and the 2020 docuseries The Last Dance.[1]

Background and personal life[edit]

Geist was born to newspaper columnist and broadcast journalist Bill Geist and social worker Jody Geist.[2] Geist is the younger sister of Willie Geist, an American television personality and journalist who co-anchors MSNBC's Morning Joe and anchors of Sunday Today with Willie Geist.[3] She is the great-granddaughter of former Detroit Red Wings star and Hockey Hall of Fame player Herbie Lewis.[4]

Geist earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.[5]

In 2011, Geist married Kevin Wildes, an American sports television producer and co-host of Fox Sports 1's First Things First.[6] The couple reside in New York with their two sons.[7]

Career[edit]

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Geist began an internship with the White Sox.[8] Geist then moved to New York City to work at a Manhattan public relations firm. There, Geist met director and playwright Dan Klores, who hired her as a production assistant for his production company Shoot The Moon.[9]

From 2004-2008, Geist worked at Shoot the Moon on a number of sports documentaries, including “Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story” (USA Network); “Viva Baseball” (SpikeTV); “Crazy Love,” which won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary; and “Black Magic,” which won a George Foster Peabody Award.[10] While working on “Black Magic” Geist met ESPN executive Connor Schell, whom she would later join at ESPN.[11]

Geist freelanced between 2008-2009, producing “The Surge: The Whole Story” for PBS as well as HBO's “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town,” which chronicled Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's recording of their fourth studio album Darkness on the Edge of Town.[12]

In late 2008, Geist joined ESPN, where she would ultimately serve as Vice President & Executive Producer, ESPN Films and Original Content before stepping down in 2020.[13] During her 12-year tenure at ESPN, Geist produced a number of critically-acclaimed documentary films and docuseries, such as the 30 for 30 series, the Emmy Award-winning documentary The Last Dance (2020) and the Academy Award-winning documentary O.J.: Made in America (2017).[14] Geist also launched 30 for 30 Podcasts[15] and produced the Nine for IX series, which was composed of nine documentaries by female filmmakers about women in sports.[16]

In 2020, left ESPN to join Connor Schell at his new production company Words + Pictures.[17] She is currently EVP, Head of Documentaries at Words + Pictures.[18]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

Geist is the recipient of multiple Peabody Awards, an Emmy Award, and an Academy Award.[19]

Geist has been honored in Variety’s “2017 Women’s Impact Report,”[20] in Sports Business Journal’s 2017 “Game Changers” list,[21] and was featured on The Hollywood Reporter's 2014 “NextGen” list.[22]
